67' Topps Baseball Set design question

Maybe one of the 67' Topps enthusiasts can answer this one. I recently received in some of my first 67' Topps PSA graded cards.
I love the set, the layout and design and great large photos.

My question is more a curiosity than anything else.
I have four cards in front of me and the name/postion line across the top is the same on two but different on the others.

#65 Tom Haller reads His Name and Position in Black Text across the top
#207 John Orsino has a dot between name and position and has the name in white & the position in yellow.
#212 Chris Zachary also has the dot but the name and position are back to black.
#226 Julian Javier is identical to the Zachary.

Is there a real rhyme or reason to this? Is it team or series related? The colors of the text do not appear to be taking the backround color into direct consideration because you can see some other cards in the set where the name appears to blend in; almost undiscernable.

And how about that dot thing? It also does not appear to be related to the length of the name directly or why wouldnt the short name Tom Haller utilize the dot to separate name and position?

Like I said...a real curiosity. Anybody here ever contemplate this or have design answers?

I tried to attach all four cards but PSA software claimed my attachments were too big, but I think you get the general idea.
Look forward to your responses.

  • I've not studied it as much as someone such as ACOWA has, but off the top of my head, I'd say it depends upon the background (blue sky, white clouds get the black...darker backgrounds get the white).

The dot appears to separate long surnames and positions so they don't appear to run together.

I don't believe either is team or series related.

One oddity: Every card but one has the facsimile autograph. The missing Franklin? #254-Milt Pappas, I think.

Ray--Did you lose power too and have nothing better to do?!?!? Power restored here @ 7 a.m. this morning. I agree--Alan probably knows. I do not.

Used to working on HOF SS Baseballs--Now just '67 Sox Stickers and anything Boston related.
