2 of 3 1967 cellos cracked...

Well, I did well to hold off for the few days I did--but since these will be submitted at WP show, I thought I'd crack a few at work. The results are:

Pack 1 (in numerical order): 4, 8, 13, 18, 19, 32, 46, 80, 81, 84, 99, 103 without the dot. Centering prevents 2 cards from grading 9--# 19 and sadly, 103. This was an exceptionally well centered pack and should grade high.

Pack 2: 1, 7, 17, 34, 40, 50, 52, 53, 71, 76, 97, 107. Centering prevents 5 cards from grading 9--#1, 40, 52, 76, 97. This pack was more typical--with 4-5 cards centered worse than 65/35. I will still submit card # 1 to get the 9 OC instead of the NM 7 (hopefully).

If anyone wants to know, I'll be breaking this final pack tonight at home and will share submission results when available.

EJ

P.S.--1954--Using a pair of large scissors, these graded packs opened much easier than at A.C.

how about a live web-cast. you could charge $2 a head.
maybe you could get Chris Porter to do the live commentaryimage
maybe even put out a DVD.

hope you had a thrill and pull all nines tonight.

WOW sounds like fun. I am still debating on opening my 59 fleer pack that I picked up reasonably. I think I am going to crack another 66 philly cello after the positive success I have had with my last submission. I still cringe at opening them but hearing other stories helps my motivation!image will report back when I finally take the plunge

Great idea on the web cast--if I only were smart enoughimage

I've opened 6-1967 cello packs (all series I) over the years now and have always ended up with at least 1 PSA 9 (usually 2). Typically I see 3-4 cards end up with "7" centering with 1 worse than that. I will not jinx myself by thinking about what grades I should get on what I opened this morning, but these were certainly nicer than any 9 I have ever owned or seen.

These cards were made to be opened--break 'em out!

  • Eric - Very cool!!

I have not typically looked for packs before but I must admit that I have scanned over the offerings on ebay lately, partly due to the excitement you have had and shared. Best of luck with the grades and can't wait to hear about your results!

That is Killer! I want to do that, what do those cellos generally cost?
  • ejguruejguru Posts: 618 ✭✭✭
Without being too direct, I have paid as little as $325 and as much as $575 for a pack. I have seen cellos on ebay go MUCH higher with HOFers (or low pops) and lower when centering is particularly bad on the top card. However, I have found that centering is not necessarily correlated. That is, just because the top card is OC doesn't mean the second, third, or fourth card is. Each card seems to have been independently cut.

It was explained to me a few years ago by someone that cello packs were made (in series) by having individulas cards slide onto a cello sheet randomly, then sealed and packaged. The closest thing I can think of to describe it is like an automatic shuffler (for you casino hounds)--cards come from 3, 4 or 6 different chutes (not sure, but all are possible with pack count of 12) and are timed to arrive on the cello so that they do not damage each other.

Anyway, take the GAI pack grading with a grain of salt. The grade is assigned to the SEAL, not the card. It does make me feel better about authenticity. For what it's worth, the two ungraded but sealed cellos I bought and opened yielded a Kaline, George Scott, and Drysdale--the packs certainly weren't tampered.

I am glad you had an easier time that what we did opening that thing up. That was a lot of fun and I hope you do even better than last time.

EJ agreed aon the gai grading, I usually only open packs with lower grades, I get them cheaper and I really don't care about the tears in wrappers if I am going for the cards. the williams pack I have is graded and has a big tear on the top from the gum but the corners are perfect meaning I should get some nice cards and I picked the pack up for a big discount becasue it was graded 5.5 . I opened some 72 packs were the gum poked holes in the wrapper also, the cards were mint. another funny story is I got a 72 basketball pack bact that was ungraded but authenticated becasue someone had touched up the wrapper with a felt pen. didn't want to sell it a t a big discount so I opened it and got a psa 9 kareem and a psa 8 riley.image

    Eric,

Didn't get to see the cello get "busted" at the National. What a thrill it would be...

Good luck on tonights offering (I'll be there in spirit)image

Well--sadly, the 3rd pack was the weakest of the 3. Cards are: 27, 37, 39, 54, 58, 68, 77, 80, 82, 86 w/traded statement, 101, 102. Cards that CAN 9: 39, 58, 77, 101, 102. There was some dinging to a lower corner that I couldn't see with my magnifying glass or loupe, so that hurts worse than centering with this group. Oh well, perhaps another chunk of change comes along and I'll have a pack or 2 for Ft. Wash in December--who knows?

well guys monkey see monkey do. I was bored and just cracked 2 of my 66 philly cellos. out of the 24 cards , I got 12 that are gradable. , possibly a 9 or 2 but most will get 8's due to centering. 4 team cards and 2 play cards. I also got a starr and 1st checklist, both o/c to much to send in but would be 9 o/c's if I did. I think this empasizes how tough an issue this set is. I knew my packs had clean edges whic his a major problem with this set so I survived there. the centering was overall terrible throughout. I don't think I got 1 50/50 all around. out of the 12 that I said are gradable, 4 will be by the skin of their teeth to avoid the qualifier if they do.

well it was fun , if I pull 2 9's I won't lose too bad. If I don't get them , it was fun anyway. makes me feel that I sold the 4 9's from my last submission too cheap. oh well. that's why it is collecting and not investing. I got my moneys worth in enjoyment.

Are you going to send in the 9OC's? I am saving them to send in on the next bulk special I use--for $6-$7, I'd like to keep them.

    Congrats on breaking it open--image

I have a stack of o/c stuff here from 66 philly multiples of all the stars outside of the big rookies. I might send some in when there is a good special for my own collection as I am a lot happier to have them in a holder for $6 than sell them for $1. I will submit the 12 that i have under the current special, if they qualify, and hopefully I will get a few 9's . does anyone know if teamcards can be submitted under the "common" special or any of the guidelines for commons? thanks
