Strike Designations and Registry Weights

David:

Last week you answered a question about whether an MS66 5c was a step up from an MS65FS or whether an MS66FS is the next step up. You stated it is a personal preference. Some would prefer an MS66 to an MS65FS, others would prefer even an MS64FS to an MS66.

The registry sets seem to allocate significant bonus points for full strike designations. Usually at least 2 bonus points are granted. For example an MS64FBL 50c equals an MS66. For some dates the bonus is even more. Many believe that this system for the registry has killed the market for coin without the strike designation. In light of the fact that this is a preference question, is it appropriate to grant the kinds of bonuses given. Wouldn't 1/2 to 1 point be enough of a bonus to recognize a superior strike? Otherwise, isn't PCGS making an extreme preference judgement, and penalizing those who prefer a higher grade w/o designation (eg MS66) to a lower grade with (eg MS65FBL). What process did PCGS use to decide to grant the big bonuses?

    Hi Greg,

The weights for strike designations have a lot to do with value, and we've tried to have a correlation between weight differences and differences in value.

I do not believe that the Registry has killed the market for without the strike designation. I believe the strike designation has killed the market for coins without the strike designation. For example, non-full band Mercury dimes became a tough sell way before the Registry existed.
