Cards You Wish You'd Sold?

gemintgemint Posts: 6,109 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was organizing my graded cards today and came across my 1972 #51 Harmon Killebrew PSA 9. When the card originally graded out, it was a 1 of 1. Someone listed #2 on ebay and it sold for $400+. So I thought I'd check the population to see how many there were today. The result...30! image Makes me think I should have sold it and then bought it back for much less later on.

Anyone have regrets of these types of lost opportunities?

Back in 84 had over 1000 Ron Kittle rookies. At the time they were selling for 3 bucks. I still have most of them. I was saving them for when he became more popular than Mattingly.

  • I wish I had sold all of my PSA 10 rooikes, 1985 to Present, back in the 1999. I took a nice hit on many of those.

I think I am going to wait for that outpouring of love from the sports writers when he becomes eligible for the HOF. :-)

We all have modern card horrors. How about vintage though (by "vintage", let's say pre-1980).
  • In the early 90's I had the only PSA 9 1962 Bob Gibson (I got it from Gem Sportscards). I held on to it for about a year, then decided to put it in a Superior auction.

I remember the day the catalogue came, I quickly went to see how it was presented, and guess what?
There were TWO 1962 Bob Gibsons PSA 9 in the same auction! Population of two and they're both in the same auction!
    Talk about a sinking feeling!
If I would have sold it in the previous auction I think I would have got twice as much.

In the early 90's my son was about 10 years old and a big football fan. I took him with me to a local card show and he ended up buying some 99-cent packs of NFL Wild Card football cards. They had some cards that had number stripes on them (5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 1000). The promotion was, you could send the number card back to the company and they would send you any other combinations you request. ....i.e. if you had a 100 stripe Lawrence Taylor card, you could send it in and get 2 (50's) or 5 (20's) or even 100 regular issues.

Well, his second pack contained a 1000-stripe Steve Young. The book on it was about $75. This was a fortune for a 10-year old. He decided to keep it as Steve Young was only getting better and had a chance to go to Super Bowl that year (49'ers did end up winning). Unfortunately, as you know, Wild Card went out of business as they were not issued a license by the NFL and had to stop printing their cards.

He was heartbroken, but after I took him to his first Giants game he forgot all about it.

  • I don't have any that I wish I'd sold. I do have a bunch that I wish I'd never bought.
