What's the impact?

Lets say that the number one set in your series went up for sale in an auction. What do you think would be the impact to the market for coins in this series? What other ramifications should collectors in that series expect?

I've seen where the prices go down at least initially. That's because the top set owner usually pays the highest prices to get to the top. After they reach this point, their lust is satisfied and they for one are not there to bid up the prices for their needed coins. The persons at #2 and #3 will purchase some of the top set's coins to fill in their holes and their needs are satisfied. They too will not be bidding "moon money" as they have in the past so prices drop. That's just what I've seen from 3 different series #1 sets being sold. Ray

  • I agree with Raycyca and I like complete that is tight connected with the number of "very low pop" coins that the set have in it composition.
In the very first moment the owners of the set ranked in 2nd, 3rd... are avid to take the crown and big deals happens involving this coins. After that the market absorbs at fair price the "medium pop" coins. The commons probably loose value.
    IMHO.

There is recent data for this question. The number two Merc set was recently sold. To my knowledge it brought strong money. Sometimes a set of this quality will fuel the market with increased activity and bring some other quality coins to market when they see the prices the top pieces are bringing.

I would look to some of the Merc folks who were involved with this sale for comment on the prices paid.

It's always how many buyers are out there and willing to pay moon money. Overall unless the coins are exceedingly rare, bigger money comes out over time, i.e. selling off the set coin by coin or in small groups.
