Question for Jefferson Experts

All things being equal (which they generally are not) is a MS66 an upgrade of a MS65FS?

Casa: In many cases (if not most), an MS65FS is an upgrade from an MS66. image

  • It is up to you, but most jefferson collectors I know think a FS coin a grade lower in full steps is an upgrade to a grade higher an not full steps.

On another day an MS65 could be an MS66, but a Jefferson without FullSteps will always be a Jefferson without FullSteps.

  • While I don't actively collect Jeffersons, I do collect Franklins, and we face the same situation with FBL's. An MS66 coin, though it might have nicer surfaces, is not as fully struck up as an MS65FBL or even an MS64FBL. Thus you're left with a choice of pretty surfaces and a mushy coin, or a well struck coin as the engraver intended with a few dings here or there - the choice is up to the collector, and usually his wallet.
