1866 Shield Nickel Pattern (J-489) PCGS-PR66!

I already have this pattern nickel in my collection (bought it 1/03 from the Bowers sale at $4700+ in the same grade) so if anyone would like this "dup" at $4500, just PM me. Obviously, I just have this one coin to offer.

This is an 1866 pattern nickel with an obverse similar to that adopted for regular-issue five cent coinage, except that the motto "In God We Trust" is set out in smaller letters and the date is divided by the ball at the base of the Shield. The reverse numeral "5" is centered within a larel wreath with the legend "United States of America" around. The 5 is tall and its flag terminates with a knob. This is called a "Dutch 5" in the Judd book.

This JUDD 489 pattern shield nickel from 1866 has around 20 coins in total known to exist and is pop 4/0 at PCGS in this exceptional grade! A combination of great rarity and finest known grade in an 1866 Shield nickel proof for $4500 - talk about "relative value" image

Again, PM me if you are interested in this coin.

What registry set would a coin like this fit in to?

I just heard a few folks are putting together the proposed Registry set of pattern type coins for PCGS to consider. You heard it here first, whether it is true or not image

I hope they do set up a registry for patterns. And I hope everyone has pictures of these neat coins.

Mark: While I would personally prefer that no registry sets of patterns were set up, I do understand why they would be very popular and be a real "shot in the arm" for the pattern market in general.

The scoop I heard, from inside sources, is that they are shooting for September for the Registry, though things always take longer than expected.
