The company was "Gone with the Stain" I believe its Dick Towle's company. There is also a guy near us that does it. The article in SCD was pretty interesting, apparently a lot of large dealers and auction houses use him.
The price runs 30-100 per card, depending on what needs to be done. If you need the info I can dig it up, e me off list. I"ve never used them and not sure if I would, but based on a lot of the stories I"ve heard lately I'm definitely in the minority.

...............others say Dick is the magician he claims to be, but not on my cards, more like a butcher.
All 3 cards were at least a grade higher before he soaked them in acetone or turpentine or whatever it was.
Dave, don't you NYer's prefer the East River, or the end zone of Giants Stadium?

Guess it happens a lot, corners built up, wrinkles spooned, cards soaked. As I spend less time buying at shows (it gets harder to find stuff I guess) I spend more time talking to people, and things come out. Being in the advertising business nothing surprises me any more, but that doesn't make it any more pleasant. I guess I can understand a little of it- removing wax stains, caramel stains, etc things that weren't supposed to be there in the first place. But building up corners and recoloring just to resell seems a bit of a stretch. Just my .02, and about all its worth!
One of the most knowledgeable guys on cards, currency and art restoration was Caramels, but he got the bounce from here about the same time as BOTN. Its too bad, he's a bit off the wall at times but is very free with what is done and how to detect it. Another loss for the board.
edited 'cause it bugs Scott!

Not sure I understand why Caramels got booted...are you implying he got booted because he addressed such a controversial subject as "card doctoring" on this board?
I am going to do some more digging into these practices because hearing about it bothers me a great deal. The whole point of buying vintage graded cards is that they have survived the test of time intact in pristine condition on their own, not with the help of chemicals or other bs.

I believe "large child" had a hissy when BCD (caramels) flamed him. Not really sure if that's the whole story, but for my money that one went backwards . Of course the account I heard was obviously biased and filled with the usual foul language. I don't think the knitting therapy has done much good at all for him.
Ant-nee,
It's a 7 hour drive to the east river from up there.
edited to say: It's closer just to drag him to Scotty's house and drown him in Crown Royal.
This bum isn't even worthy of "Old Mr. Boston-Rocking chair whisky!!

i wont need their services but
i feel for those of us who may find
our graded cards in somewhat different condition
as time passes.i imagine some wrinkles will reemerge
and some of those paper added borders and corners may
fall off!.
this may explain why we see cards that people say are misgraded
when they appeared fine when graded...
