ICC is usually very tough on these. This does not make sense.

I'm surprised too. I'll get the coins back sometime this week. Then I should know more. mdwoods

  • Probably didn't meet the PCGS criteria for "Red". PCGS is stricter when it comes to calling copper "Red".

I told them to cross at any grade. The coin is red, no doubt. Some people used to lacquer coins to protect them. But ICCS usually notes that on the holder.

We need to see some pictures as indeed something does not make sense. Usually, I find ICCS tougher than PCGS except for red versus red brown.

I got my coins back. No indication anywhere, on anything as to why the 1908 DNC.

  • I thought it was standard policy to give a reason for bodybags and DNCs. I'd give them a call.

I'm going to do just that.

BTW, I agree with their grade on the other coin. I already have a 1908 Specimen in a PCGS SP64RD slab. The color looks the same as the one that DNC, so I don't think it could be questionable color. And it was supposed to cross at any grade. The obverse has a few little specks, but the coin looks original to me. I may have to send my already PCGS slabbed coin back in with it so they can compare the two. I'll keep you updated of the proceedings.

    Mark,

Is that an option? I've often considered doing that but didn't know if they allowed it. Of course I never asked either. image

If the coin comes back the same grade, and both coins are virtually identical, you might think the higher graded coin is overgraded, I suppose. image

Edited because my spelling stinks sometimes. image

I screwed up and did not have them cross at any grade. I suspect it would have crossed at SP64. I thought if you didn't mark on the form the minimum grade, they would
cross it at whatever grade they deemed it to be. But, I found out that if you don't specify the minimum grade, they use the current grade on the holder as the minimum.
I just sold the coin on ebay, at a loss. I have a PCGS SP64RD 08 cent. I don't need another of the same grade. Probably the person who bought it will get it into a SP65
holder. image I hope they do anyway.

  • Well, I finally did it. I got the SOLO finest know 1937 mirror 1 cent to come back as pcgs SP-67 RED. It cost me a fortune to find it, but there it is. Now I have to buy that 1937 pcgs Sp-67 set for sale..yikes

I made the same mistake on 5 coins sent at the $30 level. Only two crossed and then after I went to the web site and read the fine print, crossovers work differently than raw coins. If you do not specify a grade they assume you want it to cross at the same grade.

could being a SP be questionable to PCGS?

"Specimen". I believe this means the coin was specially handled or struck but the dies were not polished like a proof.

  • I purchased a MATTE set of 1937 Specimen coinage. Every coin was a Pcgs Specimen 67 and kept the penny for my collection, but dumped the rest.
