92 bowman help

I am considering doing the hockey set. I have always loved this set, and despite it not having any rookies, it is one of the most limited sets produced in recent years. Anyone have any exact numbers?? I notice that not many have been graded.

I was wondering what flaws to look out for. I have noticed side to side centering, and bad side edges (cupped on the rears). I am aware of the foils difficulty (although most of the ones I have seem real sharp, the bad ones are bad because of centering.)

Anyone have any experiences with any of the 1992 bowman sets??

  • I opened a good amount of 1992 Bowman baseball and hockey back in 1992 and 93, though I've never submitted any for grading. Things that I recall were print lines across the fronts, especially on the gold cards, just a single line going horizontally across the front. I remember getting gold cards with chunks missing, like pinhead sized divots on the raised inside border with the picture. Also, lack of glossing, usually on the back, that would look like a rough or non-glossy patch. I seem to recall bad corners from however Topps packed them out. I don't think any of these flaws were particularly rampant across the entire production, but are worth looking out for when pulling stuff to submit.

    Good luck!
  • I've seen those lines on a few going horizontal. Thanks for your input.

don't do it! this idea is a sure-fire money waster. save yourself $2,000 or so and assemble a beautiful raw set that meets your own criteria for 9's and 10's. or maybe just grade the foils and hall of famers. the luster is long off this set and it will never return. not only are there no major rc's but the period from '89 to '95 or so is just a weak era for hockey cards - with the possible exception of graded mint topps sakic rc's.
