Two years in the making, this set includes every Irish Free State and Irish Republic coin issued from the beginning of their coinage in 1928 until 1969, after which the current decimal system was adopted.
Included is every business strike farthing, halfpenny, penny, threepence, sixpence, shilling, florin, and halfcrown, and the Easter Uprising commemorative 10-shilling piece as well. This is not only a complete type set, but a complete date set as well. With the exception of perhaps three or four coins, the set is VF to BU, with the vast majority being EF-AU or better.
I say the set includes "every" coin, meaning every hole in each of the albums is filled. The set obviously does not include the 1938 die trial coins, of which only one or two of each are known. These coins are not even listed in the Krause catalog, let alone the Dansco albums. Practically all of them are in museum collections. There is no 1943 florin in the set; but that coin is optional, with a cardboard punchout "plug" in the album slot, as only 25 to 35 pieces of that date are known.
The set DOES include a 1943 halfcrown (ex-ANACS F15), of which only about 500 are known, and a good number of condition rarities worth $100-500 each by current Krause catalog prices. Seven or eight of the better coins were cracked out of slabs (mostly ANACS) to put in the albums, and I still have the slab inserts for them.
The mintages of Irish predecimal coins were often quite small, even into the early 1960's. Production did not occur every year; there are many years when no coins were issued. Some of the supposedly "common date" Irish coins of this era are twice as rare as a United States 1909-S VDB cent!
This is a preliminary thread to see if anyone might be interested in this set. I am currently working on scanning images of the whole thing (both front and back of each of the album pages, and larger individual pics of the scarcer or more expensive pieces).
Estimated retail value of the set, based on the catalog prices in the 2002 Krause Standard Catalog, is approximately $7,500. I have a little less than half that invested. I will consider trade offers here before I go to eBay.
Will add more information later, but if you think you might be interested, PM me. I have the album pages scanned but not yet uploaded, and I'm still working on the individual coin pictures.
