Check out the selling price of this PSA 8 Tiny Archibald rookie

It is not a low pop common but for a Hall of Famer rookie it has not been submitted a whole lot. There are 30 PSA 8's of this card and only 2 nines. What surprises me is that Bob Lanier has 146 8's and 12 nines and Rudy T has 75 8's and 6 nines. I wonder if this card is tough to get in high grade or if people just have not submitted it because it does not have a high book value.

I absolutely love that set. The lettering in the team name makes it look so retro from the hippy age. That price scares me though. I don't want to pick a set that will have frequent bidding wars.

That is one of my favorite sets as well. I was watching that card and was amazed at the final price. Thats what happens when two people just have to have the same card. I think 80-90 is a fair price.

The prices have actually been fairly soft recently. That auction seems way out of whack. In general, a psa 8 common has been going for about 12.00, minor stars 20.00 and major stars for about 50.00. Rick Barry's rookie last went for 80.00. It really is a reasonably priced set, no huge dollar cards to be prohibitive, and would be a great basketball set to start.

  • aro13,
I dig that set, too. Your question of the reasoning behind the population is interesting and applicable to most sets. It will be interesting in light of this sale if we see more of these submitted or on-line in the coming weeks.

PS: Are you a Sox fan or just the logo?
  • Did you see that PSA 9 Barry rookie on Ebay a while ago? It went for $800-900 I believe. Pretty rare card.
  • HA!!! Oh my goodness!!!
That particular card has been the curse of me... It has eluded me for three years...
I have seen it sell a lot... but I have always been outbid.

I have seen it go as high as $160 twice... but It has usually sold in the $70-$110 range...
This is unbelieveable and thanks for pointing it out...

  • This card is a little tougher than many in the set... even many 8's have print spots and poor l/r centering...

I used to have every card of archibald... and this one was the death of me... I was never able to win it... whenever I launched a crazy high bid, someone countered it...
and the times I didn't even bother to bid it went under $80.00

It drove me so mad that I sold my archibald collection about 6 months ago.

dgf-Yes, I would consider myself a huge Red Sox fan. Loved the bashers of 77.
  • I am selling a 1971 topps basketball set on ebay right now. There are nine PSA graded cards - seven PSA 8's and two PSA 7's. I started the bidding at $675. My questions is this - is $675 too low for this set? I'm not up to speed on this set, and didn't realize that some of the 8's commanded such a huge premium. The Archibald would not get an 8 - more like a 7. Not sure about the West (don't have it in front of me). Are there a lot of cards in this set that command huge premiums as an 8? Should I have broken this set up and had more cards graded? Just wondering. I'll try to attach a link below. Thanks.

I only go after the Hall of Famers from the set and mostly just rookies but I think you would have got a lot more if you broke up the set and sent more cards in to be graded. Cowens in PSA 8 is a popular card, and Rudy T and Issel are as well. Larry Brown will be - what grade is the Barry?

Somebody who collects the set will be able to offer you a more accurate assessment but I would have broken it up.
  • I used to do this set in psa 8's...
It was hot... last time it was hot, carlos, feely and a few others were hammering on the bidding... but it really isn't so hot anymore...
chamberlain, alcindor, archibald, barry and oscar seem to be the bigger tickets... usually all to be had between $60-$110 in psa 8's...

a few others have consistiently sold for premiums like west, dampier, larry brown, cowens and a few others... and if set builders get involved, anything could go higher...

My psa 8 maravich sold for a staggering $27.00 recently!
many psa 8 commons go unbid at $6.99 to $9.99~
unseld, thurmond, frazier, monroe, reed, etc... seem to go betweem $10-$20 in 8's...

It doesn't seem to me that this set or any basketball set from 1971 forward is on fire anymore...
    1971 Topps Trios is strong.
    1969 Topps is strong...
1970 topps is luke warm... except the sp's and psa 9's seem to bring premiums...

Frankly, I have been discouraged lately at the ebay final sales prices for vintage basketball in psa 8's... I know that it has it's high and lows... but it has been ridiculously low lately.
