Is PCGS Brain Dead?

Mitch: I just read your comment on another thread and checked, and saw that Richard DiCicco's Standing Liberty Set was just awarded PCGS's Hall of Fame award.

What's going through their mind? DiCicco's clearly had a wonderful collection. But when they made the Hall of Fame award, PCGS KNEW it was only the second best set. My set was clearly ahead -- by 23 points, which is a lot.

Why give the "Hall of Fame Award" -- which Mitch tells me is the highest honor PCGS gives -- to the second-best set, and not the first?

Could these awards people be brain dead?

Well, if they give the award to the second-best set that's their problem, not mine. I'm going to go on ahead and have some more fun. Just got three upgrades to my Standing Liberty set. When these upgrades are posted -- which may take some time because I'm leaving the country for an extended business trip -- I'll only be 9 coins from perfect on this super-difficult set. Gosh, if anybody has one of those, please pm me and maybe we can concoct a swap. In the meantime ...

Enjoy!

Just having fun!

    Dear Just Having Fun,

Please take a second look at the HOF list. The award was given to DiCicco in 2002, not this year. In 2002, you may have had your set complete, but it was not listed in the Registry. Obviously, we would not have handed the award to the second place set!

This year, 2003, the individual sets inducted into the HOF were Stewart Blay and Dr. Steven Duckor.

We are well aware of your fabulous set and I'm sure the judges will be considering it for the HOF in upcoming years.

JHF: I truly have no idea why your ALL-TIME #1 SLQ set did not garner a "Hall of Fame" award for 2003. Is is clearly a remarkable collection and the finest collection of SLQ's ever assembled!

If I recall correctly, Cary Grant never won an Oscar and Speilberg took forever to get his award - you now join the ranks of such greats image All kidding aside, I certainly hope and expect PCGS has already penciled in your collection as one of its 2004 Hall of Fame award winners, assuming there is no time left for PCGS to get your collection recognized for 2003.

P.S. Thanks BJ for that explanation! image

Would it be more fun to have a set which is better than the Hall of Fame set image

JHF, Your SLQ set along with your Jeff set is trully a work of art. There is no doubt in my mind that both sets will
be in the HOF for 2004. I think PGCS felt your set was registered a little to late to be considered.... There loss.

I hope some day your SLQ set will be on display along with your errors. I would travel across the US to see it.

Nick: I believe I've now got the "green light" to begin registering for JHF the truly spectacular Jefferson nickel collections. They should be up later this month image

  • Dear BJ Searles:

Many thanks for your gracious response and good explanation. Consider the issue closed for me; complaint withdrawn; and apologies tendered.

    Dear Mitch:

Gosh, go for it. After these last two trips, stuck in the bank with boxes upon boxes of the Jeffs, you've earned the right to register the set.

Hey all you Jefferson Nickel collectors:

Mitch is going home with 5 boxes of my duplicates which I accumulated while upgrading coin by coin. Lots and lots of full-stepper yummies in there for you. Included are many super hard best knowns.

Hey, all you type collectors, especially 20th Century type collectors:

One of the coins I gave to Mitch to sell is the 1943-D Jefferson in MS 68, Full Steps. Strong strike front and back. Strong steps. And you just have to love seeing a chin and cheekbone devoid of all the chatter that's so common to these coins. Lovely toning in the bargain.

    Dear Roosies Only:

Thank you! Contingent on security arrangements, David (Schweitz) and Mr. Wondercoin are planning to visit sometime fairly soon and borrow the set for an exhibition. Maybe they'll scan all the coins at the same time and put them in the Registry Set listing. That way everyone will be able to enjoy the collection, not just Jon (Rosenthal), Mitch, and me.

    Enjoy!
