Grading but no slab wanted.

I prefer to have my none US coins in airtites instead of slabs. I entered one of the British Registry sets but I took the coin out of the slab. I still have the insert. I have 2 more coins needed for the set already and a 3rd on the way.

My question: Do you think PCGS will grade these 3 coins and send them back to me in airtites with the inserts so I can enter them into the registry?

Do you think they should?

They can, if they are willing. One caveat though is that they would probably not guarantee it as it will not be sealed and protected in their slab. Hope it works out for you. image

I would probably bring them to a show for grading and would not be letting them travel cross country all by them selves.

I don't believe PCGS will allow you to knowingly add the inserts to the Registry if the coin itself is not PCGS encapsulated.

What you do on your own is no ones business, I guess- but PCGS has a case against honoring your request as the coin is then subject to being damaged and would then no longer be the "same coin" as the one they provided the insert for.

I don't think they will do that for the reasons Pat mentioned. However, you can always crack them out after you get them back.

That's just it I would be really afraid of damaging the coins upon crack out.

It's a question for customer service. I am almost certain however that they will not do what you ask. Crack out once received back seems to be the only solution. However, you have the ethical question of entering a cracked out coin into a registry. Seems like it is not appropriate as the registry is only for PCGS coins. Once cracked out, it is no longer a PCGS coin. I'm sure plenty of people do it, but you are one of the good guys!!image

I do not consider any of my coins as "PCGS Coins" even if they are still in a PCGS slab. The coins are only graded by PCGS and not made by PCGS. Therefore, as long as PCGS has graded the coin and I still have the coin and Insert I still have a coin graded by PCGS that should be allowed in the Registry.

Check out the rules. They state that to be in a current set a coin must be encased CURRENTLY (their emphasis) in a PCGS holder. As I said, I'm sure the rule is violated by some, but I know you wouldn'timage.

Your willing to pay to have the coins graded just so you can enter them into the registry? image
  • I believe one of the auction houses (possibly Bowers) had PCGS grade a bunch of colonials for them (weights too) however the person who owned the coins didn't want them slabbed. The auction stated something to the effect that the PCGS opinion was xxx and there was no guarantee conveyed since the coins were not encapsulated. I'm sure for the right price..........

Actually don't they have some free grading if you are 90% complete or something?

    3. Free Grading. We recognize that not every coin in every important collection has been graded by PCGS. In order to encourage participation in the PCGS Set Registry program we are offering the following free grading benefits for sets that reach 90% completion:
If the set composition is 1-9 coins you are entitled to 1 free grading.
If the set composition is 10-24 coins you are entitled to 2 free gradings.
If the set composition is 25-49 coins you are entitled to 3 free gradings.
If the set composition is 50-99 coins you are entitled to 4 free gradings.
If the set composition is 100+ coins you are entitled to 5 free gradings.

Free gradings are for coins within the set that has reached 90% completion. All coins must be submitted at one time. If your set has reached 90% complete and you have not previously received free grading for this set, please contact setregistry@collectors.com for an authorization code. No free gradings will be permitted without this authorization code, so be sure to write the number down on the top of your submission form. These free submissions are for coins within your set that are either "raw" or graded by another grading service that you would like to "crossover."

But even these coins get slabbed.
