On this day in...

1932 the Washigton Quarter was issued. This replaced the Standing Liberty Quarter. Intended only as commerative, the quarter was continued with its Eagle back until 1975 when the reverse was replaced for a year and a half to commemerate the bicentenial of the USA, and was resumed afterwards until 1999 when the current statehood quarter program began. This program ends in 2008. Some speculation exists as to wheather the coin will be redesign or if the "eagle back" will be reinstatted. Interestingly, Washington was commemorated in 1982 with the Elizabeth Jones designed silver half dollar that depicts this great statesman on horse back on the obverse and his home, Mount Vernon, on the reverse. This coin was offerd in both uncirculated and proof versions. There were, as McDonalds would say, Millions and millions sold, to defray the national debt.

With Washington on the commem, the old quarter, the new quarter, and the dollar, it
could be argued that he's overexposed.
