Anybody know what this giant penny is that I bought today?

It's about the same size as a half dollar:
Anybody have any idea what it is? I just thought it looked cool. The dealer said it was very rare, so he was firm on the price - no negotiating. I hope I didn't pull a Barney.

Depends on what you paid. KM#810, bronze, mintage 48,306,000 w/o mint mark, 16,800,000 w/H (Heaton). I don't collect British copper, so I'm not sure where the mint mark should be , but I think yours is from Heaton - that looks like an "H" to the left of the date. The Heaton mintage is the 4th smallest of the series, which has 18 coins plus 1 proof, from 1911-26 (zero mintage in 1923-25). Catalog is $18 XF, $75 Unc.

Hmmm, Russ spending a Dollar for a Penny? Wonder what he'd spend for a Half! Welcome to the Darkness, Russ!! Plenty more where those came from!

Damn! Was one of you guys at the flea market today? Yeah, it cost me a buck. Sometimes I buy cheap weird stuff I know nothing about just because I think it's cool. There was an outside dealer, (my regular guy has a space inside the building), that had a bunch of them. I also bought a 1918.

Buy all you can for $1 each and I'll double your money.
Got quoins?
British copper is highly sought after but usually most collectors want them in the same condition as the 1902 1d posted by Cosmic. The rare dates for the George V series are the 1918 KN (Kings Norton)and 1919KN (with exception of course to the 1933 in which 4 or5 I think are known). The KN is in the same location as the H on the 1912 1d that you currently own. I would grade it as a low end VF. The strikes on this series can be very inconsistant. In addition, there are some challenging varieties to get but that can wait for another thread.

<< <i>Nice looking cent, I gyess you be moving over to the "other" forum later. It was good chatting with you. I heard that it was a dark hole and most never rise out of it!!

Well sure. A lot of people who fall into the dark believe that they can see for the
very first time. This forum is becoming so hospitable that perhaps future "fallers"
will be more likely to come back. (even if just for a visit)
Hey Russ that 1918 wouldn't be a "kn" would it?
Look at the 1918 and look for a KN in the same spot as the H on the 1912... do you feel lucky today?

Nah, the 1918 is a "plain". Next time I'm up there, I'll check what else he has. Since there's only 18 in the series and they're cheap, maybe I'll build a set.

The coin was struck since mideviel times in one form or another. It was struck
from 1860 to 1970 in this size and design (except regnal changes). There are
very few mint marks but many varieties and with most all dates.
Most are available for a dollar or two in nice shape and a collection can be fleshed
out for less than $100 in nice F or better.
Don't shock the AH lad with them red thingys....besides, it ain't the right King.
