1951 D Franklin Doubling Reverse-common?

Hi all
Found this with a bunch of Franklins that I just picked up. The reverse is doubled, from the mint mark, USofA, half dollar, the bird, E pluribus and so on.

Was this common on the 51 D's.

I'll assume machine doubling?

Thanks for any comments.

I think machine doubling...... PCGs does recognize a double die but on the 51s and not the d mint....

Machine doubling happens when the minting press is out of adjustment and the die bounces ever so slightly - so the error could be prominent or it could be very few coins, but because of the fact that it's a machine created error, there's no premium on it and thus very few people would follow it's rarity. I think they're cool however image

Machine doubling. The doubling looks flat (like stair steps), plus the fact that it shows on the mint mark also. The mint mark would not show doubling on a true doubled die from that period of time. image
