This is running on Ebay at the moment described as 18 KNOWN! RARE FUGIO W/ PTD STARS! PCGS CERT:
Any idea how many of this variety are actually known (as opposed to the number that PCGS has slabbed being highlighted by the seller)?

I emailed the seller shortly after the coin was listed with the above info and received a very nice reply. His listing is a classic case of using a slab company's population report as valid research.
Ah there we go.
"18 known" is a highly overstated. 15-Y is common, as far as Fugio varities go. The seller should focus more on the originality, as opposed to the variety scarcity. The seller's coin is very original and is great as a type representation. Actually, this coin is likely an R.3, as we do not know how many examples have not seen the light of day in decades. Not a bad coin though. Do you have an ebay auction number??

On the other end of the spectrum, if anyone knows of a holed Fugio, I'm potentially in the market for one.
<< <i>Guess the grade and variety on this puppy, the only one I got! Will post the grade later. >>

If that doesn't work I give up.

The forum doesn't allow the use of html. It uses it's own coding specific to the software. For images it's url of image

<< <i>In evaluating early copper one must be cognizant of the fact that color and surfaces are more important to a coin's overall appeal, or lack thereof, than technical grade. Look at the two coins shown in this thread and forget completely their respective technical grades and concentrate solely on the color and surfaces of the coins. One coin is choice and one coin is, well, not. The differences between the two coins are far far greater than the difference between 45 and 20 or 35 and 12. >>
Can you post that in large capital letters on this site so everyone can see it 24 hours a day? I couldn't agree with you more.
