Proof or MS?

This is the 1885 nickel I sumitted to PCGS -- I'm curious to see what your opinion is as to whether it's proof or business strike?

i'll say proof, PR63 to be more precise. i think the fields would show more apparent flow lines in a mint state coin and it looks to well struck not to be a proof. of course, i've been wrong before.

Guess it was pretty close -- the grades were posted today. A mixed bag:

Bought this as a business strike -- PR is a big disappointment. It is definitely prooflike and I talked to the dealer I bought it from about how he could tell it was MS. He told me it was because it didn't have square edges. I'll post pictures of this one to see what the board thinks (may be hard to see the edges from the pictures I have, but what the heck)...

    I'll say MS64.

The coin looks like it is lustrous vice totally mirrored to me. The strike however is superb so it might be a proof. I will stick with MS.

MS64 - Hard to tell from the scan, but the rims don't look sharp enough for a proof strike.

    Placid,

Can I help it if my lucky guess was the same as the PCGS grader's lucky guess? image

It looks like a proof to me, but PCGS gets these wrong too. There is an 1886 in a PCGS MS64 holder that is proof that PCGS did not want to fix. It is out there being traded for around 3 times it's actual value.

I just bought my MS 1886 from a board member and that was my biggest fear in buying sight unseen. PCGS cannot be fully trusted.

The rims don't look squared off like a proof.

Send it back for review. PCGS might have made a mistake.

proof. btw 1885 is imo 1 of the best struck b.s. of the series.
