I've purchased probably 10-15 different types of grab bags since I came back to collecting until I realized that it wasn't worth it. The only good thing was that I could fill up some date/mint slots with low end circs.
Totally agree keeps you entertained for a little bit and some coin folder fillers. Other than that dont get your hopes up. The people who got the really really good coins are their cohorts. Good marketing ploy.

Not a big score, but once pulled AG 21-S and VG 26-S Buffs out of a circulated lot of bulk Buffs ... and, it does not count in this context, but I also pulled a VG 14-D Buff out of a dealer's junk box once...
I pulled an 1804 quarter in VG-8 (lightly cleaned, but still nice), an 1877 indian (corroded VF), 1795 flowing hair dollar, 3 double eagles (common dates, EF-AU) and several other similar coins out of a grab bag a few weeks ago. But then I woke up and was mad as he!! that it was just a dream.
All the mixed silver bags I've bought have been searched with fine toothed combs. Best you can hope for is to find some older bags, put together when common date rolls were selling for scrap. Dealers often padded the bags with a couple BU rolls, just so when you pull a handfull out they don't all look like crud Got a BU roll of 1964 Washington quarters out of the last one.
Hey crito. don't you just luv all of those unsearched silver lots that dealers sell? That always cracks me up!!! unsearched....yeah right, and, oh, lookie there, a monkey dressed in bell hop uniform just flew out of my a$$
Some of the "slicker" one's will run these Genaric auction's and make the content description so vague, they can send whatever they want to. If the Auction closes at $700. , then the seller has a week or two to gather up needed coins for local shop's to fulfill the auction. If it closes at $700. he will send $500. worth of retail mixed coin's that he bought just this week..... If the auction closes at $200., then he just builds a $150. conglomeration., always tossing in a semi-key to make it appear unsearched.... Just another way to scam the buyer's....

Pays to be in the coin shop at the right time. Someone comes in with a freezer bag full and I'll snag a few hundred bucks worth on the spot. Always from the dealer after they've finished doing business with their customer, though. You have to observe proper coin shop etiquette
I've never bought one myself. I always figured there wouldn't be much in them and the "unsearched" bags really wouldn't be unsearched- I guess my instincts were right. After reading this thread, I won't be buying any "grab bags" in the future, either.

As a kid we would stop at this gift shop while on vacation and they had a "grab bag" box with wrapped packages and I always got one.
I never got anything of value beyond the cost of the package ($5-$10?) but it kept me entertained for a few minutes.
