what is the least expensive set to get into the top 5 with?

Just curious what ideas I would get about the least expensive set to get into the top 5 with

Assume I just purchase PCGS slabbed coins from eBay, Yahoo, Heritage, or Teletrade

and what would the set cost roughly?

It seems like the mint registry sets and the proof registry sets would be the easiest and cheapest because they don't require many coins and the coins can be had pretty cheap. I guess that's why PCGS won't pedigree these sets.

Many sets have fewer than 5 sets registered. I just glanced at the 70 & 71 mint sets. One coin in any grade will put you in the top 5. Suggest this can be accomplished for less than $10.

I would say your best bet will be in Mint sets or Proof sets. There are many sets in which don't have a lot of participants.

Right now, the Kennedy silver short sets wouldn't cost much. Well, actually the proof side would be a few bucks since it's up to six sets - still not too bad, though. But the circulation strike side only has three sets so far.

Only eight coins in either set, and readily available.

I just took two coins I already owned, and took first place in the 1907 with Gold Mint Set.

I won't tell what set, because I barely am in 5th place
