1948 Bowman Clint Hartung #37

As the second toughest card of the set (next to #44 Johnny Wroystek which is a Pop 6), at least six of the seven copies of the #37 Clint Hartung in PSA 8 NM/MT no qualifiers are presently accounted for on the PSA Set Registry.

Marshall Fogel proudly has one in his registry. Charlie Merkel probably has one of the two PSA 9s -- but it is somewhat unclear. Riding up on the rare is Lawrence Block of Block Sportscards who is now proudly proclaiming to be hoarding five copies of this card in PSA 8 NM/MT condition.

Here's the link to the PSA Set Registry

I was surprised to see someone come out so boldly and admit to hoarding vintage low population commons. I know of at least one or two others who do this on a regular basis -- but are perhaps not so brazen about it.

MS
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

If somebody is going to hoard low pop cards, they had better be willing to pay whatever it takes to get one when a new 8 is graded. That seems like a losing proposition unless you're positive that it's a card that new 8's aren't going to come up. If the pop goes from 6 to 12, your in trouble.

Good move by a seller with "National" reputation?!?!

There have been other posts about this individual's efforts in dealing with buyers and his customer service skills. I think this is an excellent example of attitude shown towards his clients.

Remember he carries the title of "Mr. 1948 Bowman Baseball" - what a joke. image

I just dont see the point in it???

Especially a business concern such as his.

Reminds of DeBeers and how they hoard diamonds. Although, compared to diamonds, how many new '48 Bowman NM-MT cards are there going to be in 3-5 years? Probably not alot .

It seems like smart business to me. What's the issue with it? We are all free to do the same type of thing while tying up and risking our capital as well.
  • sixdartsixdart Posts: 821 ✭✭
Posting his possession of these cards in this forum, a website or displaying them at a show (such as the National) would be just fine. However, creating 3 new PSA Set Registries for single common cards is just asinine and arrogant - it just shows his maturity level.

I didn't realize that he had single cards in the Registry. It would seem that he is bucking the system for the purposes of only advertising them. With that, I do take issue.

A second set is fine for the registry. A 2nd, 3rd, and 4th set on the registry containing only 1 low pop example of the same card is extremely arrogant and really just antagonizes the rest of the registry participants who are trying to get this card.

It appears that this guy has 2 major strikes against him now in the past two weeks. I don't believe I've ever done business with him, but, I don't think I ever would now. What a great business decision for a dealer in sportscards to alienate the majority of his potential customers. image

    JEB.
  • So what, if I have all the 48'B. #37 Hartung's. There isn't anything wrong with that........Is there?

If its a joke to you all, just laugh. If its not smart financially, Just laugh. The point of this hobby isn't to please others like you guys. The point is to enjoy yourself, and have fun. If others do something that wouldn't be fun to you, then its like the saying goes "Different strokes for different folks"

I'm doing the 48's fun my own fun, not yours. If you don't like it......I don't care. I don't mind you guys talking about it on here, but I don't like being slammed for enjoying something that is harmless and fun to me. In the year 2000 is when I got crazy into these 48's. By the end of that year the pop had 730 or so total 8's I owned 412 of them. no, not financially smart, but I sure had a great time buying them. I made my kids a set each. One for my daughter, one for my son for there savings or what ever.
Them are the two you see on the registry. I'm almort done with mine. I can already be 2nd if I put it on now, but I'm going to wait till its complete.

I want to thank you guys for being out here keeping other up to date on everything. It truly is an asset to have access to information that comes out on this message board.

Please, believe me when I say "there is no ulterior motive to me having the 48's like I do"
Yes, I'm called the 48 Bowman King, but its not said by me. It was others that came up with that name.

FYI. Every #37 Hartung is accounted for. I had and sold the other Hartung 9 last month to a close collector friend (Big collector) of mine in New York. He has a huge high dollar collection, and does not put any of it on the registry. He does have one on there but it's not under his name. He left it in the same name it was in when he bought it from Superior Auction in December. It is the #1 set on the registry of the 1962 Topps BB. If anybody wants it. He is selling for $40,000. Anyway, back to what I was saying. The one I sold last month and Charlie Merkel's makes the two 9's, Marshall Fogel has one 8, and I own all six of the other 8's. One of them is in 707's set right now, but I just bought it from him on Ebay last week. So it will be on the registry under my name soon also.

Thank you guys for your time. And if you can.........Please don't pick on me just for having some harmless fun with my favorites (48 Bowman's)...........:-)

    Sincerely,
    Lawrence D. Block

Nobody at PSA has a problem with it. Why should you then?

Thanks again everybody. Hope to see or talk to you all soon at a show or something.

  • Yes, I seen that but that I do not have a problem with. They are right about that.

That was 100% deserved. I let time go by way too long before correcting Our invoices.

I know it doesn't mean anything to you tough crowd guys, But I will offer my true apologizes for that.

    It has been changed now...

See I told you in one of my other replies on here........... You guys are an asset to the business, or hobby which ever it is to you. It got us off our butts to change the invoices by this message board.

<< <i>Say Hi to Craig & Eileen for me >>

LAWRENCE - I would but they are about 10 states away from me in Wisconsin. I am Cavalcade Of Sports in PA w/ a web address of qualitycards.com (Craig was offered this and turned it down). My eBay ID is also qualitycards.com and started this when Craig went as ERcards on eBay, he now changed to Quality*Cards. Confusing, yes! But so is life! Perhaps I'll bump into you at The Nat'l next week...jay

I agree that it smacks of arrogance to register a set with only one low pop card.I also see that this dealer does not seem to care that he alienates others that are potential customers. It is nice to know that potential money is no object.I learn something new and enlightening about the dealers in this hobby every week.image

    Vic
Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.
  • I dont at all have a problem with the hoarding of a low pop card - It takes a lot of time probably to look through alot of cards to get the 8's and 9's- i wish I could hoard one card.
BUT I do have a problem with registering of four different sets on the registry just for the purpose of showing off one card and I dont think psa should allow it.
  • Some called it arrogance.

    Some called it hoarding.

He called it enjoyment of the hobby.

I'm now calling it lost sales....

I was on the verge of buying three cards (in the mid to high three digit dollars) listed on his web site when I luckily came across this thread. Sale cancelled.

    Thanks, my collecting brothers.
