Registry didn't recognize my 1972-P Type 1 Ike

Has anyone else tried to add a newly attributed 72-P to their Ike registry set? I tried today and after I typed in the certification # I got the message that my Type 1 "...is not a valid coin for this set". I sent a message to the registry customer service and they responded by saying that they are "trying to determine if a new variety set will be created or if the variety will be added to the basic set." Any clues on what that means or how long it will take to get it all figured out? image

Seems like a rare variety would be welcomed in the set. I would certainly welcome it.

Does this mean when my 72-P Type II comes back, I'll have to drop it out of my set????

I sure hope not, as the coin is a $10,000-13,000 coin.

Hope they get this series figured out quickly.

Same deal happened when I tried to enter a chopped marked PCGS Trade dollar in the regular set. It only "takes" in the variety set.

I agree. You would think that the registry people would have figured out what they were going to do before they made the decision to attribute the 72-P. What's the benefit of attributing a coin if it means down grading an entire set rating? Won't this only slow the attributing process of any exisiting type 1's and type 2's in unattributed slabs and finally getting a grasp on real populations of the different types? Who'd want to attribute a coin if it means losing it from your registry set?

I remember there was a thread to ask folks' opinion. I can't find the thread. Can anyone send it to HRH and BJ?

Are you going to sell your coin at that price image

David Hall had BJ survey the current registry set holders as one of the last hurdles to getting the 1972 types attributed at all, so presumably they are doing whatever you guys wanted.

I thought they were going to put all 3 types in the main set -- no separate variety set -- but I'm not sure where I got that impression.

Personally I don't think there should be a separate variety set. The Type 1 and Type 3 represent a master hub intentional change and should be in any serious collection, just as the 1976 types are.

The Type 2 is more borderline since it's only struck with one die pair, but if you're going with Type 1 and Type 3, it almost has to come along for the ride or it'd be too weird. And even though it's a very low mintage by modern standards, it's not that tough (or expensive) to find at least a hole filler. Not tough at all (cough, cough... supercoin.com) as a matter of fact. image

Survey? What survey? I don't remember a survey? Of course I don't remember where my car keys are half of the time either. "HONEY...have you seen...that Ike survey?"

I got the survey about a month ago and I voted to have all three put in the set. Never heard anything back.

Neither did I. I did not hear anything after the feedback. Even Q&A is empty this week image

    Nice plug Tad!

At a minimum I would assume they should take any of the 3 for the 72P slot.
