    Oh, I forgot to do that. There aren't that many sales catalogued, anyway, so I don't know how much use he'd have for it now.

    All of the calculations were done automatically by another program I wrote. I just keep a small text file of sales and the program goes through it and calculates the averages and highs/lows. In actuarity, if anyone else wanted to follow my format for listing sales, then I could run the program on their file. It only takes about a second.

    Here's a snippet of my sale file...

    The first entry on a line is the card number.
    The second entry is the name. NO SPACES! Underscores and anything else are fine, just no spaces for this second item!
    The third entry is the PSA grade.
    The remaining entry(ies) on the line are the recent sale prices in decimal format for that card and grade, seperated by a space.

    This file is extremely easy to edit. Just add a new sale price to each line when one comes up!

    I considered adding population report info for each card/grade, but since that is information PSA charges for, I don't
    think they'd be too happy if I gave it away on such a grand scale.

    I don't think it would make much difference in the long term, but does your program include BINs and Reserve Not Mets? I always exclude those when researching prices.

    I think it's pretty simple. For each card that has sold on Ebay recently, it tells how many have many copies have sold, what the average price was, and what the high and low were.

    To answer other questions, it shouldn't make a difference whether the card was purchased via Buy-It-Now or if the reserve wasn't met. Why should a buy-it-now price NOT be considered? Could it have been too low? Could some money bags have taken some bait? In the end, it's a sale, so it should count. As for reserves not being met, the final bid pretty much dictates what the card should have sold for. Just because the seller didn't like that price doesn't mean it isn't reflective of the market.

    I guess my question really is:

    If the cards sell one time for a certain price, how should it affect SMR? Do any of these sales warrant a change to SMR? Or, could you look at these sales collectively and make changes based on an average sales price? It's really about interpreting the data versus whether or not it's valid data.

    For instance, is the Orioles Team Card now worth $90 in PSA 8 ... should SMR be changed for this card?

    This info, at this time, only reflects the last 30 days of activity. In the coming months or so it will reflect more sales. Right now the info isn't necessarily 100% useful for changing the SMR, but now is the time for Joe, or anyone, to let us know what types of info they would want from this kind of effort.

    I will say that in as little as three months time this information will be highly valued to someone buying 1971 Topps PSA cards on Ebay. Right now it's just a curiosity, I'll admit.

    I think results can be skewed to the downside by BINs, so I don't include them. Theoretically, I could list a '52 Mantle with a BIN of $5. Would you report the resulting sale? Is it reasonable to assume the next one would sell for $5? Granted such extreme cases don't happen, but other things do. A few weeks ago someone listed a lot of '57 Topps FB PSA 8's with a BIN of $1000. The BIN was killed by a bidder, and the lot ended up going for over $2000, which was a reasonable market price. The $1000 BIN would have suggested much lower prices than the market would bear. Just my two cents,

    One experiment to do would be to look at all auctions that have ended with Buy-It-Now and determine what percentage were far enough away from "what it should have sold for" so as to seriously skew attempts at compiling pricing data. My guess would be that it's a small enough percentage to ignore. Sellers aren't stupid, and neither are buyers--at least of vintage material! image

    Some mistakes happen, but again, they don't happen that much, and to go through the enormity of effort to determine when they do would be to add immense amounts of work that probably isn't necessary in the long run. It'll all get averaged out anyway.

    If he did it in the last 1-2 days, it would not show up on completed auctions - something many people don't realize is ebay only shows completed sales for the last 15 days, not the last 30 as they once did.

    Well, for one no sale was made. A sale (and by extrapolation, market value) is when a buyer and seller meet at a price. When a reserve is not met, it means there was no market activity, nothing more. If I place an item up with a $2000 reserve and no one bids over $1000, does that mean it's worth $1000? Of course not. Someone made an offer that was rejected. It's no different than if I go up to someone at a show and offer $100 for a card, and he says no and still has it at the end of the show. I don't know if someone else offered $150, if he won't sell it for under $300, or what the case may be.

    And secondly, many people, myself included, usually don't even bother bidding on an item with a reserve that's not met.
    Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?

    As I listen and read, I guess I should try exclude auctions where the reserve isn't met. That makes life a bit more difficult, but to be complete it's what needs to be done. Since I'm familiar with the '71 set and it's pricing, I should be able just to look at the final price and determine if it seems low or not, then check the actual auction page. There are only a few lowball sales in my listing so far, and some of those I actually did check because I thought they were qualifier cards. They weren't, and I don't recall seeing "reserve not met", so I think I'm fine right now.

    Yeah, BINs probably do average out over the long term. I still think they have the potential to skew results in the short term, but I'm not adamant about it. Sol makes a good point about reserves, too.

    Jrinck: I'm wondering how you went about doing all that without bothering to go through and take a look at each individual auction. Without manually weeding out the auctions, you'd have all kinds of flotsam and jetsam in there that probably shouldn't make it - it was pointed out that cards that didn't sell or didn't meet the reserve would be in there, also spammed stuff and mislabeled things might make it, as well as O/Cs and other qualified cards. If indeed you did manage to compile a list while filtering out the junk, but didn't invest the time in checking each auction, I'm wondering how you did all that with just a program.

    In a nutshell, I did a search for all completed auctions. There were 19 pages to sift through. Some hockey, some basketball, some football. Any auction that didn't have any bids was not considered. Any auction that DID have bids was assumed to have been completed, and I used the final price. The only times I would actually look at an auction page were when the final price seemed a bit off from what I was expecting, OR if I needed to check a card to see if it was actually 1971 Topps baseball. As much as I know of the checklist, by heart, a few odd names do make me pause!

    There were only a small handful of auctions in which the final price made me look at the page. One in particular was a #5 Munson PSA 6 that sold for only $12.06. I was thinking it had to be a qualifier card, but lo and behold it wasn't. Here's the auction if you're interested.

    Most of the cards sold were commons, and the prices all seemed to be in line. If anything, the ones that seemed out of line had final prices HIGHER than what I would have expected. This was mostly for PSA 8's when it did happen.

    All of this raw data was then fed in to my program. I do all the Ebay searching and the program just crunches the numbers I give it. If a price later turns out to be one I shouldn't have considered, it's a five second change to eliminate it and rerun the program.

    I manually enter the prices. This only sucks the first time you do it as, in my case, there were nineteen pages of auctions to go through. But if I check completed auctions every day, then the amount to wade through each time is significantly less from now on, perhaps better allowing me to possibly even physically look at them all individually.

    Here's a tip for anyone wanting to do this: After you have gone through the fifteen days of previous auctions, each new day ONLY ADD THE AUCTIONS FROM THE PREVIOUS DAY. So today (the 16th) I make sure I'm current through the 15th. This way I don't have to time stamp where I am in the current day. I just look only at auctions that closed the previous day and I know I will get them all. Tomorrow, the 17th, I'll add everything that closed today. And if you do a search for '71 PSA cards right now, there are a TON ending today, so tomorrow I will be busy!

    Jrinck - the problem with that is, many of the acutal final sales prices don't end up in the system right away. Some cards that have finished in the last 24-48 hours have incorrect prices listed on the "completed auctions" page. To get the REAL final price, you either have to wait a few days, or click on each completed auction to see what the card really sold for. So beware.

    I also don't usually waste my time on reserve auctions unless it's already been met or it's something I really want. As for Buy It Now's, in my case they would almost always skew the average price upwards. When I sell, I already know what the high end EBay price is and I set my BIN about 10% above that. Not too high to never be used but low enough that people will bite. 99.9% of the BIN's used on the auctions I sell are in my favor. I don't use them on low pop cards though because the sky is the limit on those.

    As for buy-it-now's, usually the BIN price is either SMR or slightly above. Anyone biting at that isn't really going to skew the results too much unless SMR is totally off-base. Sure, a Blyleven PSA 8 with a BIN of $55 (a recent SMR price) will skew things, but I'll notice that and wouldn't count it if there were other auctions that support a much higher price (which there are in this case).

    Now a BIN of 10X what the card normally sells for-- THAT ACTUALLY SELLS-- is another story also, but that's rare, and I'd certainly notice the price discrepancy as well. This is why I picked '71 Topps. I used to collect the set and I still peruse the auctions. I know the prices and what to expect.

    How is this going to work in the long run. After you have say 6 months of data. If you just average the sale prices, the average may not reflect the current market price. Perhaps you could add a date field to your data and then print the complete average, high and low, and then the average, high and low over the last 1-2 months??

    I also don't think that a single sale should effect the SMR. I think you need to show a trend before changing SMR.

    You've posed two related and important questions in at least two threads: (1) What "price" should a price guide reflect; and (2) how should data from one or a few sales affect the "price." So far, I don't think anyone has taken up the challenge of trying to answer these questions so I'll give it a shot. When I'm looking at a price guide, what I'm looking for is a reliable broad based indicator of what cards have been selling for recently. Because of the small number of transactions typically associated with a card, I would define "recently" as one year. It would be helpful to have a range of the prices plus an average price on those transactions. I'm not looking for the guide to provide a "true" price, which I would define as the price the card "should" go for if the market were perfectly efficient. I want to use the guide as a tool in understanding what the range of prices one can expect for a particular card if the card were sold today. With respect to the second question, there is great volatility in prices even with respect to the same card in the same grade, but I think a price guide could take into account, for example, all PSA 9 1 of 1's (1 of 2's, 1 of 3's, etc.) in a given set to determine a less volatile range for 1 of 1's. For example, if a set has 30 1 of 1's commons and 29 of the 1 of 1's trade in the $90-$110 range, and one of the 1 of 1's trades at $200, one may reasonably interpret the data as meaning that the $200 does not reflect the "price" of the card (defined as what this card would usually trade for today). Hopefully, using such an approach to analyze commons in conjunction with the pop report would give a large enough sample size to determine the "price." With respect to stars, those cards (hopefully) would trade more often to give sufficient data.

    A couple of additional points. PSA seems to take a cautious approach with the SMR to reflect a longer term view of the "true" value of a card. In many articles, Joe has cautioned about the volatility the Set Registry may create as two or more collectors attempt to complete the same set. From these articles, I gather that Joe is less concerned about tracking the moment to moment prices of cards but is instead looking beyond the current transactions to what he thinks will be the "price" of the card once the frenzied bidding dies down. I don't think this is a bad thing. The experienced collector will know that the SMR is just one tool and is looking at other indicators (eBay, auction results) to determine what the "price" is at a particular moment. The experience collector, however, knows (or should know) that the realized prices must be taken with a skeptical eye if those prices are the result of a thinly traded card that is sought by only two or three set builders.

    The unexperienced collector, however, will be more likely to take the SMR as the Gospel. If the SMR blindly took prices on realized sales and put those in the SMR without any thought as to whether the price was an aberration or based on a significant sample size, those collectors might be taken for a ride when they pay $200 for a PSA 1 of 1 that later turns out to be a PSA 1 of 27. This problem is less significant with a older, more stable set as 1952 Topps since you are less likely to see wild population swings and there is a broad base of collectors interested in that set.

    I think, therefore, that Joe is looking more at trends in prices rather than individual sales, particularly where the sales are the result of the purchases of 1 or 2 buyers. I think he is trying to be more "predictive" with the prices and he assumes that once those 1 or 2 buyers get the cards they need in a set, the current price will not be sustainable. So I think the SMR serves the function of being more of a long-term predictor of "price" (for this purpose, what the average of all sales of a partcular card would be over the next year) rather than merely reporting the relaized prices of the past month regardless of how few transactions are reported with respect to a particular card. I understand why someone would want the current data, and I think that data serves a function as well. I think some people want the SMR to be the latter guide rather than the former, but I think both types of guides are useful. The only think I can say for sure that should be changed in the SMR is to use aggregate data for 1 of 1's, 1 of 2's, and 1 of 3's, to give common prices with respect to population. Of course, there would need to be the standard disclaimer that the card might not retain such a value because the pop of the card may well increase (particularly with respect to late 60's and later material).

    Alan, I thank you for posing the questions because I think that although there is probably no "right" answer to the questions, thinking about them helps everyone to understand what unconscious assumptions they are making about "price".

    Yours is the first and only good response that I have seen thus far to my questions.

    Many times, if I see a card that I have in my inventory sell at or above what I would want for one of my cards, I will email the bidders that bid the acceptable amount and about 50% of the time I will sell them a card. What about the other 50%? I know a fraction of those are hesitant about buying from an unknown person...but I always supply a high quality scan. We're those legitimate bids and should they impact the SMR?

    Lastly, I thought Davalillo asked a very legitimate question with respect to what actually caused the 1952 Football cards to take a hit on SMR? I think having an understanding of the process of change is important before everyone starts providing reams of data to Joe Orlando.

    Regarding how far back to go in keeping track of prices, I might actually do something a bit different and only keep the last 20 or 25 sales for each card (or maybe even as low as 10). A popular card, like Pete Rose, would probably get 25 sales in maybe a month or two, but somebody like Dave Baldwin might take a year or two to get that many. So it's not so much about time, but activity. More popular cards will have their prices fluctuate more readily than normal commons, so trying to apply a fixed time schedule on ALL cards could be a limitation.

    This thread is interesting. I do collect '71 Topps PSA 8s and there isn't a more skewed market in my opinion for cards than '71 Topps Baseball. Here's my problem with '71's on eBay. If someone posts a scan with a black background, I'll pass. Same goes with the aerial survaillance shots -- I'll pass. If the card is 60/40 I'll pass. If the card has a lot of chipping, it's a road kill as far as I'm concerned. On the other side of the coin, if someone posts a real high resolution scan, with a white background of a dead-centered, high-end "8", I'll bid a premium on it and so will many other collectors. How does the SMR reflect that?

    Dude, I have no idea how to reflect that. Again, it comes down to percentages. What percentage of listings contain poor scans? Not a whole lot from what I've seen. Hopefully it's a small enough of a percentage not to count in the long run.

    As for chipping, etc, the grade is what the grade is. I don't know if it's beneficial for ME to judge what is low or high end for a grade, and to make provisions for it in my price listings.

    Then, there's this conundrum...

    1971 Topps Pete Rose PSA 6

    This is normally a $25 to $30 card in this condition, but this sample sold almost for what the lowest 7 went for. This auction either is reflective of the current market, or somebody highly overpaid. Either way, though, it's a legit sale and I'm obligated to record it.

    I know you'll probably find this on your own if you are intent on keeping a complete record, but I thought I got a great deal on this '71 Topps #210 Carew today. image

    SMR is $65 and I think this card is worth at least that - my snipe was quite a bit higher than my winning bid. I can't believe I was the only bidder. As Dan stated, maybe the rather small scan on a black background turned away some bidders, but I think it looks great. I'm obviously not expecting a Gem Mint card and some slight border chipping is most likely present, but the scan on the black background probably amplifies it.

    Nice price on the Carew. I don't think the scan is that bad. If I needed or wanted that card I would have felt confident bidding on it. BTW, before yours, the last Carew 8 to sell sold for $72.94.

    Recent 7's have sold for $15.01 and $15.51. A 6 sold for $9.99. DSLSPORTS had a 7 on that didn't sell. The opening bid on that one was $16.99. Their shipping is unusually high, though--which brings up another area to consider when tracking Ebay pricing. I'm beginning to realize just how tough of a job Joe has!

    didn't get a chance to read through the whole thread, but dealer reputation has alot to do with things also? if someone with little feedback shows up , and the price stays down, should the smr drop? probably not. also these things can be seasonal, the summer is genarally slower should all prices in the smr drop in the summer then go back up in the fall? just a couple of thoughts . ebay is a great source but the transaction facts tneed to be looked at. also the shipping is another good point, some people charge $1 where other people charge $10. some people will max at $6 so I might bid more on some cards since I have saved on shipping. this is of course on lower valued stuff
