    Jim,

Although I don't know who this person is, I'd like to comment. While I understand why some people hide their sets as they approach 100% completion and are actively collecting the set, I just don't get it under any other circumstances. It makes absolutely no sense to keep your set hidden when you are less than 20% complete on a 600+ card set (yes, this does happen). Over the past few years, I have been the recipient of many great deals offered by others who have been able to view my sets and offer cards that I need. For me, the purpose of listing my sets on the set registry is to share my set with other collectors who have similar interests. This is why I also post a scan (front and back) of every card I list on the registry. These hidden sets don't even count in my opinion. I think PSA should not even allow a set to be hidden - with the possible exception of sets at 95%+ completion. If you hide your set, you are missing out on some offers from the abundance of other collectors here and you are alienating the other collectors of the set who are willing to share their collection with the public.

    That's my 2¢

I have noticed when updating my sets that the registry "defaults" to the set being hidden. I have to click "yes" in order for it to be seen. They may be the issue here.

Jeb, I agree and would go as far as saying that hiding sets should not be an option. I know others are going to disagree.

    Neal, JEB,

I think that some of the things that make the Set Registry great are the different choices that we all have. We have complete set collections, HOF Collections, individual player collections, team collections by year. The choice that people make on what to collect is completely up to them. I've even seen BJ defend some of the player collections that may not make sense to most people (Mike Mussina, Joe Jay for example) but this is a place where Collectors Universe has given everyone a voice and a chance to decide which collection choices are right for them.

In my opinion, the same is true for the "view" or "not to view" options. Yes, it might be frustrating to some to have sets up there that are not viewable, but heck - they're not our sets, right? I personally like the ability to "close it down" from time to time. Right now - all of my sets are viewable except for one. I just closed down my 72 set and it will remain closed until after Nationals are over. Maybe it will help and maybe it won't help me - but I do have a few dealers who keep an eye on 72's that I still need in PSA 9. There have been times where I'll start flipping through their 9's at shows and see $65, $65, $75, $55, $55, $125, $110, $65 - and you can guess which ones I need.... Sometimes they're low pop, but sometimes I'm told (aww, he's a Yankee... - or the pop report really doesn't reflect how tough this card is..., etc.). So, for me - the ability to close it down a couple days or weeks here or there - makes me feel better and might actually save me money from time to time.

And then there is the competitive aspect of collecting..... Just take a look at the 70 Kellogg's Registry. I don't think that they've closed them down JUST because they're worried about people seeing what cards they have. By not closing them down, you can bet that some of those snipe bids will be bulked up a bit on cards that multiple guys still need...

So - I believe that I PREFER the sets to be open, but that I understand why some people close them...

  • The hidden set that really baffles me is the Bryant 86 Fleer Basketball all PSA 10 set. What exactly are they gaining by keeping it hidden

    FB...

I agree totally with you Frank. As a player of the 1970 Kellogg's set you mentioned, and as tough as it is to be fair, you still have a dozen SERIOUS bidders out there. I win a few and lose a few. I'm sure that the other guys feel the same way. Look at the Registry. All the top spots are blacked out, and for good reason.

I can't figure out that one either!!!???!!! All the cards are as high as they can get, but the owner still darkens the set??? Maybe it's just an "in your face" 'kinda thing....

  • i can see hiding sets only so your competition (other registry participants) doesnt know what you need, but other than that it bothers me.

the all psa 10 set being hidden is kinda baffling.

Some people may register their sets in order to be able to track their collections online but do not want it to be known that they have a sportscard collection perhaps due to concerns over theft or a nosey spouse.

I think the guy who should really watch it is Chris Renaud. People could really kill him, especially on 1971 mint 9's. Now if he decided to hide his set, I wouldn't blame him in the least.
  • is chris renaud the guy who dropped $14 large on a bunch of 1971 psa 9s?
  • purelyPSApurelyPSA Posts: 712 ✭✭
Yep. And he's not shy about getting his cards, either. Also, he's a pretty busy guy from all appearances, so he's much more likely to just shell out the cash for something than shop around for awhile. Which opens himself up to all kinds of moneygrubbing, at least I think it would.

Chris snipes every auction now, so nobody really knows what he is going to bid on. I have won 2 or 3 cards over the past few months that I was sure I would be outsniped on by Chris. He needed the cards and didn't end up bidding. I don't care about someone trying to guess which cards I'm going to bid on next and I'm sure Chris doesn't either. We've got more to worry about and an extra $10 or $20 isn't going to break the bank. I'll keep my sets visible on the hope that someone will contact me with one or two of the cards I need to complete the set. I get several emails each month from people offering to sell me cards that I need because they were able to view my sets. I got 2 cards in the past week for my 1970 set in this manner. If somebody wants to look at my set and guess what cards I'll be bidding on and then run up the bids, good luck. I pass on a lot of cards I need based on quality of the card, seller - there are a few I won't buy from anymore, and price.

I love to look through some of the sets - especially those sets that include scans of the cards. I know there is some competition here, but I still think that you hurt yourself more than help if you hide your sets.
