Say You Were Working On a Set...

to add to the Registry. Would you wait until it was completed or near completion before posting it? If so, why?

  • Put the coins up as you go! This isn't about surprising someone with a completed
set; this is about having fun, and sharing your collection with other people. There
is no one who is going to make fun of someone when they are starting out a new
set. (Unless they know the person and it is in good fun)

IMHO, I enjoy watching my sets grow as I feed them new coins. (2 weeks until the
next feeding time in Baltimore!! image )

With the ability to block your email and/or coins, there is no need to wait until a set is completed or near completion in order to list it. Do you wait until you have all the coins in a raw set before putting them in an album?

Two very good points. I would add to that: Unless you purchase a complete set you add one coin at a time, don't you?

It seems some are more interested in the "certificate" that's handed out once a year, than in assembling a collection. As a result you see sets being updated and added at the last minute to get the "certificate".

    Have fun with it.

Having just listed my first PCGS Registry set, for me the issue was the "first". Having tried to "buy the coin, not the holder", I have a variety of "holders". I had to decide whether to make a "committment" to PCGS, to NGC, or to one of the non-grading/holder oriented sites. Recently I decided that the majority of the coins I liked the most were in PCGS holders, so... Now I have to decide whether or not it is worth the cost (and time without the coins) to grade and cross some of the others. For my proof Jeffersons, I'll grade and cross some.

However, I also have over 90% complete sets of business strike Mercuries and business strike Buffalos. I may never place these in a PCGS Registry set because 80-90% of them are not in PCGS holders. A thousand dollars to grade and cross the rest of the coins in each set isn't an investment I want to make at this time.

As for a new endeavour, I'd likely have to have a set 20-25% complete before posting it, just so I know I'm really committed to the series. I've been infatuated, and then not, too many times.

I put mine in one at a time as I got them. It was kinda fun seeing my sets raise up in the ranks.

  • Im not 100% sure but I think that there is some priority given to those who list their coins first. If a set is tied for a position the set that was regitered first will be at the top of that list.

If you're worried about showing your hand then you can always block the set from viewing until you're ready.

I register coins as soon as I get them. Right now, my sets vary from 6% to 53% complete. It's much more fun to watch the set grow.

I dont have mine up because I have many NGC coins in my set. I may registar the PCGS portion once I complete the set. To registar it now whould only frustrate me since I couldnt have all my set listed. I'm not advocating the addition of NGC coins to the registry, as that posses many complications. I'm mearly pointing out why it's not currently registared.

Rank or the "suprise" factor are unimportaint to me. If I thought there might be some chance of me getting into the top five, it would. Looking at the top Lincoln sets, I doubt I'll ever get back on the top twenty.... even when my set is 100% complete. My set will be nice, however. And as long as I like it, that's why I spend time and funds.

It depends. The first set I listed I had about 50% of the coins. From then on out. If I was going to do a set, I would start it with one or two coins, and build from there.

The "surprise" is annoying. I put mine in as I go. It's fun to see people around you upgrading.

  • My early Roosevelt set is complete and I enter upgrades as soon as they arrive. But I could see if someone was going to make a run for the number one set and held off until it was complete. In that way you'd catch the current #1 off guard...
