MODERN Bashers TICK ME OFF!!!!!!

One thing that just irritates me to no end is how some members on here consistently bash
"Modern" coin collectors and think that PCGS ahould basically quit wasteing time on grading these coins!!!! I have been collecting coins since 1963 when my grandfather gave me my first 1878 morgan as a xmas gift. I will tell you that that coin is very special to me, but the 16 PCGS ms-67 state quarters that are in the set i am building for my grandson is just as special!! In fact they are more special than the PCGS ms-65 1900 O/CC coin i have. So if you dont want to collect the "moderns" fine, don't but at least remember when you started collecting coins and remember the kids and new collectors of today is what will carry this great hobby into the future...

They're only "moderns" depending upon "when" you are standing when the question is asked.

All of the older stuff were moderns at one time, just as what is now a modern will someday no longer be.
They're just jealous.

I collect moderns as well as more classical silver (and other) coins. My only objections to post-1964 coins ($.10-$1.00) are flat strike and inconsistant luster. It took me awhile to accept the attributes of these coins versus the silver coins that I had been collecting. I also have credibility problems with the high prices for some high-grade moderns. I guess the market will bear what the market will bear.

Anytime anyone bashes certain coins or market values, it's an attempt to boost the value (or perceived value) of the coins they currently hold.

Vrtech99: I can empathize with your consternation, but modern bashing is at
a very low ebb. Out of respect for those who have stopped we should avoid
modern bashing bashing. Even in the coin papers there are a lot fewer people
attacking coins and collectors. In a way it's a shame since we have so much less
opportunity to sing the praises of some of the later date coins.

These guys here are mostly just yankin' your chain.

All coins are neat! Happy hunting.

My advice: collect coins you enjoy, pay a fair price, have fun!

I will agree that many modern coins lack the inspiration and craftwork of early date coins; but you know, modern coins will eventually not be modern anymore...

I started this because everytime i read a thread about PCGS being behind and the delay in getting coins back is because: (Quote) "They are so far behind because they are grading all this modern JUNK".. Like one persons Rare coin should be put to the front of the line.. or PCGS should not grade these so they get their coins quicker... I say "HOGWASH"

Hey you sound like I used to. Don't sweat modern bashers, coins are coins. Some are cooler than others, but all of them are cool. Some of the coins minted in my lifetime are going for pretty good bucks these days. I like em all. mdwoods

He that among us that does not rifle through his change looking for something special can throw the first stone at moderns!!!

If you have a chance go to SOPATHOMETV.COM and go to the COIN VAULT listings under proofs. They have a special set of NGC PR70 Ultra Cam 2003 sets in special holders at over $1200.00! Hey, go figure those silly modrens. Look at silver proof sets through the 90's till now. I'll agree that they all will grade out in the 68-70 DCAM or UCAM, but try to put a collection of modern MS coins in high grade from '64 to current and you would spend a fortune!

I like them all!!

They used to bother me a very long time ago, but I now realize that they are uncivilized barbarians with closed minds. I have over 200 reference books in my numismatic library and collect everything from Roman provincial to silver Eagles. I don't consider them purists, I simply look at them as quasinumismatists who are just passing through. They have yet to go through the full maturation process to become real numismatists.

I picked up (3) really cool coin additions to my 19th century pattern nickel collection this week, but, I would have been nearly equally excited to pick up (3) really cool coin addtiions to my #2 Registry set of MS Kennedy half dollars. Anyone who truly loves "coin collecting" should not be short-sighted with tunnel-vision believing coins dated after a certain date are essentially "no good". That is so disingenuous IMHO.

Yea, those modern bashers just turn my stomach. Some of the new State Quarters have designs that clearly rival some classics. The Sac...now there's another beautiful modern coin with an obverse design full of rich history or at least depicting a period of importance. And these coins won't be moderns forever. In a few generations they'll be classics also.

Now as far as paying 10X ~ 100X one point grade rarity premiums for these coins is concerned....anyone who does that is NUTS!
