Stella Colbert's #2 Washington Quarter set being auctioned

I just looked through the 83 coins on Bowers' site and I must say that is the ugliest collection of quarters I have ever seen. Of all the top pop's that are there, I have 7 coins on my watchlist (which includes the coins I cant afford and have no intention of buying). Tallk about the holder and not the coin.

Makes me think twice about what the top sets really contain. I will take my set over that one anyday. And if you really want a nice top set, MANOFCOINS' quarter set is by far nicer and once complete I am sure it will rank up there Registry wise with the Colbert set.

I have not seen the set yet, but, I can certainly state that I agree with WWQ that there have been super PQ sets of Wash quarters built in the past and absolutely horrible sets. A few of the super sets include the Green set (ex: Benbow) and Registrycoin's (ex: White) set, and, best I know the current #1 hidden set is also a nice collection as well as a couple unregistered sets and the set Manofcoins is assembling.

When the "dog" sets come up for auction (and, again, I am not commenting on this latest set for sale), the handful of neat coins usually get attention and the other 80%+ of the coins often sell for very low prices which often skew typical asking prices for certain coins for a while.

    Mitch

On the contrary Mitch.. it appears that prices are EXTREMELY strong!! The 2 MS68's are over $10k already. And I actually added the total amount of the set at over $165k so far. The #1 Walser set sold for a grand total before the seller's fee of only $104k only less than a year ago.

However, I am going out on a limb and guess that B & M have set the opening prices and that is what I am seeing.

Check it out Mitch.. there are many coins I would pass on even if I had the money.

So I guess there is no "contrary" image

P.S. Those $10,000 and $12,000 B&M bidders for MS68 coins must have missed that the MS68 quarter in the Heritage sale is currently at $575 image

WWQ - Your comment - you pointed out the prices were likely reserves - hence, no "contrary" - right? image

WOW.. let's not hold back any. It is amazing that you can have an opinion and I can't.

At least I looked at the coins. At least I know what nice Washingtons look like. As I am sure you know your Lincolns better than me.

The set has a currect auction price of $165k!!! $60k more than the Walser set, which I think was much nicer!! So, Did I hurt someone's feelings? I think not!!

But I do think that most of the coins are DOGS!! I wouldnt want them in my collection!! The point I was making is that just because you bought the holder and are the #2 Registry set, doesnt mean you have a nice collection in my opinion. As WONDERCOIN said, DOG sets do come for auction. And I think this one is according to the pictures that B & M put up.

So call me what you want. There was a point to my post and you missed it!!

  • WWQ - thats the trouble my friend. You can make your opinion known. Just choose your words carefully. There is a difference to me (and I'm sure many others here) that certain un-written rule exist. Like the one that says you can call "collectors" plastic collectors but you don't call John (for example) a plastic collector. See the difference? You can say "how do those modern coins get all that money", but you can't say "John pays to much for that modern". See the difference? You can say "I think my set is better than yours" but you can't say "Johns set sucks". See the difference? So show us all that you have a little class and go back and edit you comment. I'm going back to edit mine as I don't really think I need it anymore.

You need not edit your post my friend... BJ already got my PM with your written words and a request asking to have you removed from the Boards. Profanity of any kind is not called for. There are many YN's that visit the Boards and that type of name calling and insult is not going to be tolerated. Not by me or the Administrator of this Board. Just ask Greg Gmaurli (sp?)

So.. suit yourself "my friend". You may have dug your own grave on this one. Sorry. If you had any problem with my post.. you could have posted something quite differently to let me know there is this unwritten rule you speak about.

Bottom line is.. I was really disappointed to see the coins in the #2 Registry set, which I was hoping to add a few to my own set. I dont think my opinion will keep the auction prices down!! They are already at healthy prices and that is with 19 days left before the auction.

BTW, I did not know of the "unwritten" rule you speak about. But, in any event, your point is taken.

That makes three "unwritten rules" that wwq doesn't comprehend!
    Three strikes and you're out!

    BJ get the hook!!!

Funny how he sucks-up to Manofcoins now, after flaming him when he first joined the boards! image

And here comes Quattro to jump on the bandwagon. What is your opinion of the set? I am curious to know. You are a Washington collector.

I don’t post often on the message board, but I did find this thread interesting. As some of you know, I am a type collector. I like the PCGS registry, BUT I love appealing mint white high quality coins more! Now, when I say appealing, I know what’s appealing (as with beauty) is in the eye of the beholder. I have a couple of friends that love “tone coins” more than mint white. Not me! I have “never” seen a tone coin that I liked. Also, I have never seen a mint white coin that I did not like. To me, a mint white coin with a scratch across Miss Liberty’s face is more appealing than a technical prefect tone coin. Are the white coin lovers right and the rainbow loves wrong? No... we just have different taste. I agree with some of the earlier posts, some “high quality” sets are canine-ish from my point of view. But the facts are, these are high quality coins from a technical viewpoint. By the rules of the game, technical grade is all that matters in registry world. I have been looking for several months now for a “high quality” MS67 Washington to replace my “beautiful 1939 MS66 white mint-fresh Washington”. I am limiting myself to year 51-64. Now, I too would like to think the #2 registry set would have several coins for my consideration. Although, the only one that “I Liked” is the 1962 which the bid is already > $2500. So, will I ever up grade my MS66? Maybe not, according to Mitch, a blast white coin of this type is 10 to 20 times the cost of a toned example (if you can find one). Why not pay the price you ask, well, to me a blast white MS67 is no more appealing than a blast white MS66. I think Bowers once said in one of his books, a mint state coin has no character (they are all pretty close the same). I think he’s right, but when they are as white as the day they were minted, then to me they are beautiful. (Beauty with no character, interesting) If the coin has toned over the years, then it has lost it’s beauty. But if you love the registry, then the 1/0 MS68 is what you need not matter what the coin looks are!

Currin: Keep in mind that my comment pertains to SPECIFIC coin dates/mintmarks from 1948-1958 primarily. Coins from 1959-64 are not included in this list for sure (e.g. 1962(p)). Also, the 10-20x comment is the maximum premium for blast white - some dates/mintmarks might carry a 2x or 3x or some other premimum. But, the maximum is indeed 10x-20x - I gave 1957(p) as an example I believe of a $75 toned PCGS-MS67 (bought last 3-4 coins at that price) and a $750-$1500 coin to be sure in blast white PCGS-MS67 if one was offered to me. image

An interesting point is raised here by the previous discussion: toning or whiteness as a function of desirability, grade and collector demand. As it stands now, the Registry rank is based on points assigned to strike and preservation (the current scale) while toning or whiteness is not a "rankable factor." Are we on the verge of having "bonus points" for toning or whiteness? And how would such bonus points be awarded?

After selling what used to be the #1 proof washington registry set, I have now embarked on collecting a rainbow and color-toned proof washington set. Right now, the coins I'm buying may have outstanding color and toning, but they might not have the grade points that other coins with less or no color might have. As a result, my rainbow will not rank high in the registry, but it's certainly attractive.

Interesting thread, starts out with the author trashing the a set for sale and contrasting it with another set, pointing out that other set is much nicer. Then the owner of the other set posts that the trashed set is an impressive one. Boy am I confused.image
