STATE QUARTERS AND AWARDS

I guess that I picked the wrong week to be out of town and out of communication with the Registry Forum. The number of e-mails I received this past week have indicated I should respond to what happened so here goes. I want to thank all my fellow collectors who expressed support for my State Quarter Collection to receive the number 1 place this year. Your positive comments and recognition of my hard work to build the finest set I can, with in my financial ability, truly means more to me than any certificate. However, the reality is that I was beaten this year and someone has put together a really magnificant State Quarter set. My friends are basically upset with the way the end results happened. Here is the story as I know it: I had a done deal on the Pennsylvania D pop 1 coin which is worth .04 points. Added together with my 68.06 that coin would have given me 68.10. The coin was however sold to the person with the second place set for a higher price than I originally offered, and which was accepted, for the coin. The second place set finally ended up with the coin and 68.12. If the original deal I had had gone through, the Pennsylvania coin's points of .04 would be subtracted from the set with 68.12 leaving 68.08. My set would have been .02 higher at 68.10. Sometimes the profit motive and money speak the loudest. It's a fact of life. The bottom line is that I hate to see someone withdraw such a fantastic set for any reason. We probably have the two best State Quarter sets in the world at this time. It just doesn't get any better than that. I would hope the set that was deleted will appear again and the coins be shown this time for all of us to enjoy and admire. So whether we live in New Jersey or California. let's just get on with the hunt. We have a long way to go.
Sincerely,
Donn Murphy

    Donn,

You sir are a class act. I've never had the pleasure to meet you. But reading your post tells me a lot about your character. Perhaps that's why so many expressed frustration toward what happened in their posts. It was their way of showing their support for a class guy.

    Keep up the hunt!

Well, I guess I know who I will never do business with. Nice group of upgrades to the set this week. Looks like 5 pop 1's from a perfect set. Of course, before we run the 10 year course, who knows what the pops will be on all of the coins.

Donn: As you know, I had no idea what ultimately happened to YOUR PA(d) (pop 1) which you had a deal on. On the other hand, you apparently received an email (which you shared with me today) which showed you exactly where your coin went to. Your actions here prove you are an incredible class act. I suspect the current owner of that coin did not know a prior deal had been struck on the coin at the time he bought it. That is possibly why he decided to pull his set after recognizing that coin cost you first place. Frankly, IMHO, in a perfect world (or a Disney movie) the PA(d) would be returned to its rightful owner - YOU. But, as I mentioned on my earlier thread, we are not too naive to know often LIFE IS NOT FAIR.

But, Donn, as I previously stated, you are the MS state quarter set winner this year IN EVERY RESPECT! Keep up the great work! image Wondercoin

  • Sir.

I've never had the pleasure of meeting you, but would like to someday. You've taught all of us an very important lesson. Not only teaching all of us what a true gentleman is, but most importantly, that this hobby is not about who has the #1 collection. But it's about collector's sharing their accomplishments, recognizing others, sharing knowledge and building a true comradery for those of us that love numismatics. This is a special club with special people , of which, I strive to be a member. You are a true role model, that shows us once again why love this hobby. My hat's off to you and the many others like you that make the hobby what it really is.

    Yes, well said.
Recognition of registry collectors like this is important.
There may have been some lack of respect on some levels for those who take coin collecting to this competitive "extreme".
Yes, there is much money, and, yes, there is much ego, but there is also a deep respect for our hobby and each other's interests and rights.
Good Job to Donn, and others involved with the registry, and this particular issue. Also, Good Job to our new registrant, who "pulled" his entry, seemingly after reading these related posts. You (both) seem to be class acts.

Donn, you are truly a stand-up guy, and appreciate you sharing your thoughts on the mishap. You are what collecting coins is all about. Great job and a really nice set of states.
