Jeff Proof Collectors: Don't look over you shoulder, but ...

... As Satchel Paige said, "...something might be gaining on you.''

Welcome to Richard, who is shaping up as a formidable competitor/collector: LINK

I messaged Richard to congratulate him on his very auspicious start and invited him to join the Jeff Proof Gang here on the boards.

What a terrific start to a set: the early hard-to-get proof 67s, plus that highest graded 42-P in 66CAM (I would LOVE to see that coin). A coin like that truly makes the set stand out. I think this will indeed be a set to contend with.

Welcome, Richard! Please come play with us on the boards!!!

P.S. And that 1950 in 66DCAM. This year is SO hard to find with good contrast.

  • Also the 52 in DCAM. His comment for the '39 is cameo obverse! He sounds like our kind of guy. I hope he does stop by and say hello.
  • First I would like to say damn you to everybody on this board! Because of you I have decided to start a registry set. I have started to work on a proof Jeff set 1938-1964. To make it as challenging as possible on myself (since I can be an idiot sometimes) I have decided to only buy them as raw coins (in proof sets or broken out) and get them graded myself. Give me about a year (give or take I figure) and then I will put them up. So far I have 2 worthy of the set, a 1941 in PR67 and a 1942P T2 in PR67. I have additional but I'm hoping to get some upgrades before I regrister the set. I managed to pick up 5 more raw ones this weekend in Colorado Springs to send in. For some reason I'm focusing my energy on the 1938-1942 before I more on into the 50's & 60's. It's all your fault for being so nice on this board!!!!!

    I agree with poptopRuss

give me about 10 years and I hope to be in the top 10 for something - silver proof dimes first

The more the merrier, Jared! I, too, enjoy "making" raw coins -- I love the thrill of the hunt and it can be a lot more economical if you can find the raw vs. slabbed in the same grade!
  • Keep us posted poptopsRus. I've always appreciated those sets that are made from raw coins.
  • Welcome new Jefferson collectors!!

Building a set from raw coins is probably the ultimate challenge and probably the most rewarding!!!

Good news: Richard has been lurking and says he will join us on the boards as soon as his CU membership is confirmed ...
  • Five more pre 1950 proofs off to the plastic factory (along with some other goodies). Now all I have to do is wait 75+ days before I can find out if they are worthy of the set. I really hope the 1938 grades well, it has nice rainbow colors to it.

It will be great to see Richard. And welcome to the Jeff proof club, poptopsRus! You've picked a challenging (but rewarding) way to put together a nice set. We all look forward to developments, so keep us posted!image

Well I got my id and password today so finally I can reply. First, thanks for the invitation to join you and for all your positive comments on my set. I really like all of the coins in the set. Each has a special feature or two. I also have several raw coins and coins in non-PCGS slabs. I think some are exceptional. Eventually, I will have PCGS grade some or most of these. However, given their current long cycle time, not now. I like looking at the coins too much to let them go for months. Besides, PCGS grading the coins will not change them. I hope PCGS will agree with me on their grades. But if not, then I'll still like them. They each have appealing features. It may be that some of these features are more important to me than to PCGS. That's ok with me.

As for watching over your shoulder, let's see. RGL just listed his fourth best set, and it pushed my best set from 21st to 22nd. Hmmm... And BNE has a truly awesome set. I would love to see a picture of that 1958 DCAM. And I certainly could use poptopsRus' 1941. And... I do expect to move up - I want to be on the "front" page. And we'll see how it goes after that.

However, my next significant purchase will not be a coin, but a camera. I think I've tried to get my scanner to do the job for too long. While it seems to work for silver, particularly dcam silver, it just isn't up to the task for nickels. It's time for a camera and one of the domes. I want to post pictures for all the coins I place in Registry sets. I'll let you know when I make some progress. This also will let me look at all of the coins more easily.

Thanks again. I'll get a cutesy icon and post more information in my profile as I find time, likely over the weekends. And I'll comment in a few other threads.

    On with the hunt ,

    Richard, aka coolkarma

Thanks for the message. There are quite a few impressive Jefferson sets in both proof and MS. The competition is definitely heating up! Bring on the competition.image
