1971 Topps Baseball Mint/Gem Mint Question

I am very much interested in hearing the opinions of any readers of the message board on this particular question. I have a 1971 Topps Braves Team Card graded an SGC 98 GEM MINT. I am aware how difficult the 1971 Topps are to find in mint condition, let alone gem mint. My question is - how would you go about selling this card to maximize the sale price? Would it be better to sell as is, graded by SGC? Should I convert it to PSA before trying to sell it? Use Ebay with a reserve? Without a reserve? Post it for sale on the Set Registry Board or Vintage Card Board? I have to say it is a visually stunning card, the best 1971 Topps that I have seen in twenty years of collecting. The black borders are pitch black with no chipping whatsoever. Please share any thoughts you may have. Thanks, gregmo32@aol.com

    Greg,

I'd try maybe running it with a reserve first. But to maximize your money I'd try
crossing it over. Congrats on a tough find.

I answered the question on the Vintage Sportscard Trading Board..

    here

If you post the same question in multiple places -- some will either ignore your post or not have a complete answer/discussion in one place instead of the other....
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

I very much doubt PSA will cross it over into a PSA 10. There are SGC collectors who would want the card in a 98 holder.

  • without seeing the card, its hard to say. I agree with Gaspipe SGC people would prefer it to stay in its current slab. PSA collectors will pay only a fraction of its PSA 10 value in an SGC 98 slab (I have several SGC 98s, none of them will cross-over to PSA 10s. Teh nagain I've crossed over several SGC 96s to PSA 10. Its the card not the slab. That having been said, I would try to cross it over with PSA's crossover service if it does not cross to a PSA 10, sell it in the SGC slab. I suspect that a set builder on the registry will pay more than an SGC collector, but that's just my $0.02.

Speaking of the boys in Wis, I heard a story that one of them punched a customer at a show and was arrested. Any truth?

Thanks for all the comments. I am not sure who you refer to by "those boys in wisconsin." Unless an offer blows me away, I will likely send in the card via the PSA crossover service. I assume I can state a minimum crossover grade. Is that right? I also asume that an SGC 98 is worth significantly more than a PSA 9. What do you folks think? Would it be worth a try to send in my 1971 Topps PSA 9's to SGC and try to get 98's? Thanks, gregmo32@aol.com

The answer to both your questions is YES. You can specify a minimum cross-over grade. If the card does not meet that test PSA will not break it out of the SGC Slab. All of my SGC 98s are worth about 2-3X the PSA 9 price. (yet still below the PSA 10 price - hence my desire to cross them over every chance I can.
