Now, why do this?

Here's an interesting auction. What I'd like to know is, why blow it all out? The only reason I can come up with is that he needed the cash pretty quick. Based on his descriptions of what cards - and conditions - are included in the lot, he could have probably made another $1000-1500 by breaking up the lot and selling it in groups of 1-200.

I've dealt with this dealer for '71 raw before, and he's only probably 1/2 a grade off, which is really rare, especially for 71s; also, he pays attention to centering, so you don't get a whole bunch of "NM/MT" cards centered 90/10...which says to me, this buyer got a fantastic deal. Lots of gradeable stuff in there. I was hoping in vain that it wouldn't sell and I'd be able to pick up a couple hundred cards, but oh well. If the buyer is a board member, best of luck on the lot. It'll be interesting to hear how many 9s, if any, this sale nets.

Also, if the person who bought the lot is a board member and more of a collector than a dealer, I'd be interested in buying some nice dupes you might wind up with. Drop me a line at purelypsa@aol.com and maybe we can work something out. Too bad it wasn't Bauerfan that won.

Your link doesn't work. I searched ebay for the item # as well, but that doesn't come up either.

It seems that he has culled the lot pretty well if he knows what he seems to know. Is the market for PSA 7 1971 Topps stronger than the grading fees? If not, then the lot sold for about what it should have sold for.

I'm not a 71 guy, but these cards look like PSA 5's or 6's based on the centering and border chipping.image

I bought a "NM-MT" 1968 set from him a few years back with mixed results. The Ryan, Mantle and Bench were already graded PSA 8 with the Mantle being a weak 8. The rest of the stars in the set ended up grading mostly 7 or worse (some I didn't bother to submit due to poor condition). The Superstars card was returned as miscut and therefore didn't grade. The only real highlight was a Mazeroski which came back a 9. Overall, I came out even at best. If I bid on another of his raw cards/sets, I will deduct a full grade from his advertised opinion.

Deducting at least a full grade on any eBay raw cards is a good rule of thumb.

Whwn I sell raw on EBay, I put the exact desription based on PSA standards. Needless to say that the buyers are extremely happy when they receive the cards and I get some great feedbacks for it. My closing price usually takes a beating though because I'm not overgrading my cards. I just don't have the heart to do that to people though. A few extra bucks isn't worth making another person feel like crap. Life's too short for games like that.

Gemint - wow. I bought a dozen raw 71s that were on Ebay about a year back from this seller. The seven cards I submitted received 8s. The other 5, I felt, could go either way for a 7 or an 8, so I didn't submit them. The commons were fairly low pops and I got a Yaz for half of what a graded 8 would have cost me, so I figured I came out very well, even with the 5 cards I didn't submit.

    Wabittwax:

What is your E-Bay user name? I'm always looking for raw cards. If I know you grade correctly, that will certainly encourage me to participate in your auctions.
