I received my PCGS Collectors Club ms/68(?) $1 Silv. Eagle....

and it got me to thinking. I shouldn't poo poo the modern coins. It's the modern coin GRADING that should be poo-pooed!!!
If 3 graders and a finalizer looked at this coin and all agreed it was ms/68, well I'll be a horses uncle.
Am I the only one who thinks that modern coin submissions, like this coin, just go through and get a number thrown on the slab?

based on discussion w/ mad-marty, & seeing other posts like you just made, i gotta believe that 90% of pcgs's (& ngc) biz is in moderns. if nobody was submitting that stuff, they'd go under in a matter of weeks - i suspect

I think they are just promo slabs. They don't have a cert number(if I remember right not going to dig for it) and I bet if you tried to get pcgs to reholder it in a regular pcgs slab they would not do it.
  • Does PCGS share the statistics of the quantity of coins that are BB'd? I would bet from the look of the latest 2003 moderns that they are having to grade alot more coins to get the grades of MS67+. I would like to know if the standards are lowered when it comes to moderns because the quality is terrible coming from the mint.

Most of the SAE's were poorly struck to begin with as looking through my tubes. MS-68 may not be that far off considering the strike. I like the US Flag insert club Edition. Not the greastest coin in modern times, but still some what acceptable for the price of admission!

I have a pair of them, and you're right Placid, there is no cert number on them.
  • I must have been one of the lucky ones as my example is about perfect with only two invisible ticks that blend in with the background where they are located. It does not even have any of the rim abrasions you sometimes see.

The coin is GRADED ms/68. The lack of a cert. number doesn't mean diddly to me.

I hardly believe that the quality of strike would be taken into account for a modern issue like this. Brach mint buffalo nickels? Sure.
Plus, the strike isn't the problem. The coin has bag/handling marks that should limit it's grade to probably ms/66 or so.

Maybe I just can't grade these things.......isn't that a shame image

With that said, I would ASSUME that ANYTHING graded ms/68 would be better than just decent, no?

  • The one I got last year is perfect except for a couple of contact marks. I wondered why it wasn't MS69.image

Mine has a small reed mark. MS67, ok, but MS68 could be a stretch. But I don't collect these so maybe it is right.
