I heard that it is going to be a rotation between Chicago, Cleveland, Atlantic City, and Anaheim. I don't know how true that is though. I'm not sure where the next one is though. I'd like to see them try other city's than just those 4 though. I'd like to see NYC, San Francisco, Dallas, Denver, Vegas, and somewhere in Florida. Anaheim and Atlantic City really alienates one coast or the other. Midwest is the best.

    Cleveland.
And you guys have to step back and look at the $$ involved for the promoters and dealers.
OK...The South and California has proved (well at least shown in the last few instances), that the
cost vs. attendance (and $$ attendees spend) ratio was poor. Dallas, Anaheim and Atlanta simply did not work.
Purely on a $$ basis, and purportedly "to keep the National alive", a three venue rotation was adopted a few years back. It has nothing to do with where you live or your politics. Chicago works like a dream for almost everbody (easy to fly direct from everwhere, and cheap). Cleveland is really a great venue and I hear the promoters can get it at the right$$ and offer tables for decent prioces.
Atlantic City has a new convention center (as I understand it) that offered a great package to the promoter. It also works as a central hub for everbody on the east coast (and god speed to you if you think this national convention can outlive e-bay without being near NYC at least evry third year).
So that's how it has to be.
If you don't like the hype of A.C. please come and join us in Cleveland.
personally, I'm with Griffins, and want the next National to be held on Fiji!

So cost is an issue? Doesn't Tijuana have a convention center?

Yup, finding the last few cards for your set while passing around a few shells of kava, served by dancing girls in grass skirts. Boys, it doesn't get any better than that!
Seriously I'm really po'd they pulled it from Anaheim, especially in a back room deal. It really isn't the national anymore, just a big east coast show. SF is expensive but they have conventions in Las Vegas, that would've worked as well. San Diego too. If it doesn't move around to different markets more often the national won't oulast ebay.

    welll....CLAP my hands to that.

I agree with what you guys say in part.
But buck it up, getting to A.C., Cleveland and Chicago is quicker for somebaody in L.A.
than for me up here in God's country.
stop complaining and try priceline.com or taking the whole thing as a business trip.
Griffins you can be the official PSA videographer, perhaps a web-cast?
Maybe an award winning documentary on Slabaholics??

Why does everyone say that. The National hasn't been on the East Coast in 15 years, since Atlantic City hosted it in 1988, which is the last one I attended...jay

Because Jay, anything east of the Rockies is the East Coast.

I have to disagree with Anaheim being a flop. Both shows there (94 and 98?) had great attendance and no complaints from all the dealers I talked to. It will be interesting to see how the AC show does what with the temptation of gambling away convention money and all.

<< <i>Because Jay, anything east of the Rockies is the East Coast. >>

VARGHA - I cannot argue against that logic image

About a decade ago, I came up with a plan for the National. Take the US and divide it into 4 regions, East, West, North & South. So every year it would alternate into 1 of the 4 regions. Take the East Coast this year Atlantic City, 4 years later use another area in the East, Baltimore, Boston, NY, Philly and so on. The West could have Anaheim or LA, then in 4 years maybe Phoenix or Vegas etc.... I'm sure every major city has an area that could house an event like this. It seems that the NFL SuperBowl has the adjoining FanFest that brings in 100,000 people. Same with the NBA and its all star game and similar events. I went to the Baltimore All Star game at Camden Yards, and across the street from the stadium they had a convention center that housed the FanFest. I was always curious why a National wasn't there. Go to the card show in the day, and at night go across the street and see a ballgame. So lets add new venues for the National, New Orleans, Denver, Minnesota, San Fran, Pittsburgh etc.. Share the wealth! Let it truly be a National...jay

I agree. maybe you guys can start a petition drive and we can force our will on the promoter.
better yet we could start a not-for profit national collectors organization . imageimage
    OK, now I'm banned right?

Dont listen to Wayne Muskegon Michigan would be better. I know at least 10 guys who would attend.

  • I also think it should rotate among the four regions of the country. Also, why not include my current home town of New Orleans in the mix? Plenty of convention space, plus loads of other "attractions". Why do you think the Super Bowl comes through here so often? This city has shown it can host an event. I'm not saying the National has the same excitement surrounding it as the Super Bowl, but I think it deserves some thought.

I think I can make it to Evansville. Only a couple of hours from St. Louis and I know the road well. Keep pushing Wayne.

ive often wondered why indianapolis has not been mentioned. There is a huge convention center attached to the dome. Not to mention, only 30 mins from my house.

You know, Austin got a beautiful, big, new convention center a couple years ago. Thousands of people have no problem coming from all over the world for SXSW. We've got an airport and double-A baseball and a nude beach and everything.

And then I wake up and think that in a city of about a million people we only have about 3 card shops that are worthy of the name, and one monthly show at the Holiday Inn that seems to draw fewer patrons and quality dealers every year, and I'm about to drive 200 miles to Dallas for the biggest show of the year for me (never have gotten over to Houston for the big Tri-Star shows; they get mixed reviews each time).

I know the dealers veto Dallas outright every time it's been suggested because of the past disappointment, but that was, what, 13 years ago. I find it hard to believe that it couldn't be successful there. But I guess it's out of driving distance for most East Coast dealers, and I remember that ad in SCD for the Philadelphia Sportsfest that said,"100 million people live within a day's drive of Philadelphia". Can you imagine if they all showed up?

    Helionaut-

You're in Austin? I went to the new convention center when they had the car show... about 3 years ago. I'll tell ya, they'd have to finish the construction downtown first!

On a side note, maybe they should have the shows in cities with major airport hubs in different regions. Houston, Chicago, NYC, etc. Cheap flights for all.

Gee- one in Detroit would be nice
  • I was thinking - What could I offer to bring nationals to Evansville? I'm not a big drinker but the thought of free beer occurred to me. But after reading some of the comments on the board I decided it might be cheaper to fly elsewhere. It's too bad Don Mattingly closed down his restraunt/bar - that would have been a great place for a registry get together.

  • Two cities that would get my vote are:

    1) Detroit [Convenient airport & reasonable lodging]. Never have been to a Gibraltor show, perhaps this would be my chance to meet the folks there at a "national" event. image

    2) Orlando; only 2 hours from my home and plenty of areas for the family to enjoy there besides the national.

CoachHouston -> The show this weekend is actually at the Arlington Convention Center, right next to the Ballpark. I've always had a good time at those shows.

    Mito-

The Gibaltar show would not be a waste of time. I go every month, and am rarely disappointed, although it's true that they don't have much in the way of slabbed material for sale.
