Unslabbed gold coins in B&M auctions

Mr. Hall,

The recent B&M auction contained numerous rare date raw gold coins (especially Dahlonega $5's and New Orleans $5's and $10's) that were of great interest to me. The previous B&M auction was also particularly strong in these areas. In both cases, I felt uncomfortable bidding on coins that I would otherwise consider making a strong bid (either over the internet or by a representative in person) if the coin was in a PCGS holder. I must assume that any unslabbed gold coin is a "problem" coin, and this eliminates me as a competitive bidder. I am hoping that you might consider working with the folks at B&M to get all raw coins that can be graded into a PCGS holder as I think this will ultimately be better for both the seller (higher prices) and potential buyer (greater confidence in making strong bids) and therefore better for the parent company, CU.

Hi Robert...Your assumption is not neccesarily correct. Some consignors simply don't want their coins slabbed. Some of these deals are old time collections and the coins are freash and un-graded. Ask an expert at the auction company, B&M or other companies whichever the case may be, to give you a phone description of any raw coin your interested in.
