Why would a straight line of rust be running through a copper coin? Could it be from a die, or just copper contaminated with iron?

If it is red, it is probably raised corrsion, not rust. No iron in copper cents. It may have sat against something in the ground I suppose, and it was found by a metal detector.
Could have been paper cliped to something in damp storage as well.
