Buying early large cents (Honest Sellers?)

Can anyone suggest a few locations to purchase Fine - EF large cents from 1816 - 1793. As I get to these date the prices are high as expected but I would like to avoid all the tricks I have been reading about in this forum.
Thanks
Dave

I'd recommend Craig Hamling. Go to http://www.uscents.com/

  • Thanks! I do not mind spending $500 or even more if I know my collection will be a sound investment.

you need to know exactly what you are looking at and be able to deside for yourself if you are going to be buying early cents

Another couple of dealers I'd recommend are Butternut and Shawn Yancey.
  • Thanks for the info. How about dealers in the Milwaukee/Chicago area?

I would recommend Tom Reynolds. He has a website (Early Coppers), has an excellent selection, grades fairly, and visits a lot of the midwesterm shows. Good luck. Large cents were a previous haunt of mine. I am sorry that there is so little discussion of them on these boards.

  • I have spent years collecting proof sets and then someone gave me a large cent. After a few days of reading, I was hooked and ordered a 1793-1857Dansco book that has many error type coins and extra varieties in it. Now I have spent years filling this book with Fine plus coins until I got to the 1793 - 1805 page. Now I am having a hard time trusting sellers. So I guess it is back to the books! I joined this forum to gain some much-needed opinion about coins I have located but am nervous to purchase. Usually when I like it I buy it but when the price is $1000 and up it has to be more them likeimage

This is the kind of thinking that makes me cringe...

There is no guarantee that any expense you make in coins will turn out well as an investment vehicle. But, that should not preclude you from making the best purchases available to you. Since making the best purchases available to you is always the proper course of action, I advise you to stop thinking of coins as a get-rich scheme.

Collect the best that you can afford of what appeals to you; do it for the pleasure of collecting. That will be a sound investment in your emotional health!

  • I agree! I display my collections for all to see when family and friends come over and just when I want to sit back and look at them. When I say "Sound Investment" what I am hoping for is not to make a big mistake and buy a worthless coin. I do not expect to ever sell these coins in the near future. It has taken toooo many hours finding them. Which is half the fun!!! I am proud of the collection. Some collect art, some collect stamps, I collect coins because to me they are artimage

These are two of my favorite web sites:

    Jade Coins

Early American Coin Gallery (Tom Reynolds)

Tom has some nice colonials that are reasonably priced.
