Is 2 points (from an AU53 to an AU55) worth 5K?

In another thread it was brought up but never answered. Is 2 points (from an AU53 to an AU55) worth 5K?

To me if the if the eye appeal is there and you can afford it why not? I don't think any of my coins are worth much more then 1 grand but I have satisfaction in knowing some of them are tied for pop. top. An upgrade lets you get there incrementaly. Joe

If I have a nice AU-53, there is absolutely no way that I would replace it with a AU-55 for another $5000. I am not into this competitive collection/registry phenom, and I would much rather use the money to get another coin for my set.

Sure it's worth 5 grand if you want it bad enough. Many coins have steep prices jumps from just one grading point- for example a common date $5 indian goes from $2,500 in ms64 to $10,000 in ms65. mike

If I was into that Type set, and a side by side comparison proved the 55 better eye appeal, I'd do it im a heartbeat!!

I wonder if people who do think it's worth it have similar spending habits in other areas of their lives.

Possibly, but not likely. Consider the case of a very liberally graded
AU53 with 5% luster remaining that could be a real dog and to most worth at best strong XF money. I have seen many AU53's that are of that quality. On the other hand the AU55 could have 50% or more luster and be very close to UNC. On a rare enough coin there could be a real side by side $5K difference. However this is certainly not the norm.

Pretty much almost never, though that depends on your personality type.

If you are going to obsess about this and not be able to sleep at night and destroy your family life because you only have an AU53, then I would say that springing for the better one would be $5K well spent.

Not for anything I collect. 5K would sure buy some nice coins by itself!

If I could afford the 5K to upgrade from a 53 to a 55 I would probably keep both. On a 93-S Morgan you just can't go wrong.

The dollar amount does not matter. Everything is reletive to your income and budget. Like the person at a casino betting with hundred dollar chips. Each bet is a proportion of what he came with. I may bet the same proportion but I use 5 dollar chips. Joe

It would be less outrageous if that jump were from 50K to 55K, but I suspect that's not the case on the coin you are discussing. No coin is worth $5K for me to hold in my collection.

I thought the price difference was about right. If both were solid for the grade, I thought the deal was spot on. He would have been going from a coin with 56 higher on the pop charts to a coin with 36 higher. In that date I think the 55's and 58's are the best price movers over the next 5-10 years. I can understand why he was ticked the deal did not get honored.

The coin in question on the other thread was an 1892-S Morgan Dollar. I need to see the coins because so many nice high end circ 93-S have been dipped and are not original. To answer the question... It depends

Barring the Lotto, I probably won't ever do this. Don't have a problem with people who do.
Like the other guy said it's all related to finances and proportion of your income.

I would think most people would find other uses for spending $5K on coins though.

Its all about eye appeal and your pocketbook. If you're talking about something like a 93S Morgan and one looks like it's been through the grinder and the other looks like it's just barely seen some circulation and could be a push 58, I can see some people doing it.

I saw the thread on the 93-s (Jay Parrino coin)

To simply say that 5,000.00 is or is not a good deal for a chance to upgrade from 53 to 55 is hard to do. Just knowing the grade alone, I would not be able to substantiate the upgrade cost. However, if the 55 was much more nicer in eye-appeal and solid for the grade with minimal contact marks, vs an average 53, I think it would be worth while too for 5,000.00 on a 93-s Morgan. (based on you having the extra funds to do it).

On the other hand, Lets go the other way, If I had an 1893-s Morgan in AU-55 which was nice, but typical for the grade and then along came an AU-53 which was fantastic, solid, with exceptional eye-appeal, I would be willing to trade down to get it with little or no cash difference depending on both coins. (Grade on the holder is not as important to me as the coin itself)

It might be worth the $5,000.00 premium even if the grades were the other way around! (AU55 TO AU53!)
It's all about Eye Appeal and THEN "Grade". We know the two don't relate to one another smoothly.
