PSA missed this one

I just got the results online of one of my submissions today and was surprised at one of the cards. It was a 1979 Topps Ozzie Smith that came back evidence of trimming. That's amazing considering I opened the rack pack which the card came from the day before I sent this batch. If it came from a wax or cello pack, I could see the possibility of a tampered pack being resealed, but not from a rack. I don't blame PSA too much because they're human and they didn't know it was pack fresh and they're doing their best to detect stuff. The only problem I have is that I received the grades on the website today and they were already shipped today. I spoke to somebody on the phone at PSA and she said they would look at the card again free of charge but I would have to pay for the return shipping on the card. She said they would refund the shipping if the card came back ok the second time. But what if it doesn't? The card is badly off center but I figured a 9oc would sell better than a raw card that looks like that. I don't think it's worth the extra money to take a chance that they'll change their mind. The only beef that I have is that they shouldn't ship the cards the same day that the grades are posted. That would have solved the whole problem. The grader could have just re-examined the card if it was still there. There should be a 1 day lag between when grades are posted and the cards ship. Hopefully the right people at PSA are reading this and might address this problem.

STEVE - The "Evidence Of Trimming" tag doesn't necessarily mean that you put an exacto to it and trimmed it, it also could mean that the card is undersized. So through no fault of your own, the cards specs didn't merit grading...jay

I've had that happen with a card I pulled from a pack. The second time around it was slabbed.

Jay, if that is the case, it should get the "mini size requirement" label (which includes a refund of the grading fee) instead of "Evid. of trim."

In any event -- PSA does make mistakes, and as I have often said, given that a "perfect PSA" is impossible -- I would rather have them grade authentic unaltered cards as "evid. of trim." than have trimmed cards end up in PSA holders.

Your suggestion makes sense (about waiting a day or two to send the cards out), but it would be a logistical nightmare for PSA to manage such a process -- especially since a large percentage of submitters (I presume) do not even utilize PSA's online capabilities to track the grades before they receive the cards.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Marc> I would agree that is should have had an desigation of min size req, but. . .at the same time, I'm not sure how much thought they really put into coding the reasons for not slabbing. I think often times min size and trimming tend to get lumped together.

I think that Mike nailed it right on the head.

I generally submit 200 to 500 cards at a time and it seems to depend on the grader as to whether I get a mixture of "min size req" and "evid of trimming" or simply "evid of trimming" for all cards that don't meet the size standards.

  • It sounds ridiculous but...it could just be as simple as one grader running out of a particular label at his work station and not wanting to break the flow by chasing down more of the correct label; so he just sluffs along with what he's got till he gets to a stopping point.

Oh...what was that?..........the coffee truck is here?... great!

    Sort of like that. :-)

    That explains my grades:

PSA Grader: "Where did all those Mint 9 labels go....oh well, I guess this one will be an 8". image

Seriously, I don't believe the grader labels the card from a stack of similar labels. Each label is printed individually. Even the "EVID TRIM" labels have the serial # on them.
