JFK Halves - guess the grade

Here are four 1971-S JFK half dollars: all graded by PCGS. While the pictures aren't great, they are taken under identical conditions---didn't move the lights or the tripod; just the coins. Any thoughts on the grades?

  • It looks like #3 has the most frost. #4 looks like it is the cleanest with the best fields. They don't seem particularly heavily frosted. I'd guess #3 is 68 Cam, #4 is 69 and the first two 68.

    Disclaimer: these are wild guesses...

It's very hard to tell from the photos but I'll try.
    1-68
    2. 69
    3. 68 Cam
    4. 69 Cam
If I'm the closest, do I get a 71-S 68DCAM? The one I've got is nice but I'm still searching out that elusive 69DCAM. This is a HARD date to get in 69DCAM!!!! My 1964 69DCAM was very easy by comparison, as well as my 1967 SMS 67DCAM. There have been qyite a few 68DCAM's up for sale lately.

Just from the scans it looks like, I'm not an expert but I will give it a shot.
    #1 pr 68
    #2 pr 67
    #3 Pr 68 Cam
#4 Pr 69 DCam or Cam

  • Sorry---been up to my neck at work. I was sort of hoping to see what Russ would say (and he still might).

The first one is actually the only non-cameo: it is a 68.
    #2 is a 68CAM
and the last two are 69CAM.

#s 1, 2, and 4 I just made from raw proof sets. My feeling is that if #3 is cameo then #4 should have a shot at dcam. I'm thinking about sending #s3 and 4 back and see if they will give me (preferably) an upgrade to #4 or a grade review guarantee for #3---they just aren't the same grade!!.

My 69 Cam is identical to the cameo on my 68DCAM too! My 68DCAM was graded years ago but my 69CAM was graded over the last 2 years. I just bought a 71 proof set where the Kennedy will grade a 69 Cam and perhaps 68DCAM if I'm lucky. I also just bought another 71 raw that in the photos looks like it should easily grade as a DCAM. Only probalem is that the photos canbe very decpetive. The reverse on the 71's are VERY lacking!!! I've had a couple of 71's where the obverse was a 69DCAM but no CAM at all on the reverse> I don't know if the mint was trying to save money or the reverse dies were made of a better material, but, a PCGS DCAM coin is rare in any grade and truly a rare beast. Happy hunting and good luck on your submission. Please let me know how it turns out. Ray
