Hey Merc Collectors--Has Anyone Picked up Any Coins Lately?

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
I just can't find anything I need lately... The coins I do need are going to be tough!

What have you found lately?

Only the one shown on the Musical Chairs thread. Got it yesterday. My 18D will be here Monday but the temptation to put it into the set got to me this morning so it was added. Man if it gets lost in the mail I will feel like a Baffone or a Idiot. image

Oh Yea....one other was bought but no confirmation has come through yet. Darn Web Sites anyway. image

Lucy mentioned it briefly over on the Coin Board (Did not want to get Flamed to Death, I guess, by the Negative Registry people) but I do not think she came over here to say hello to us. image She owes apology Dimes wouldn't you think ? Aww maybe a Nice Toned Frank will work also.

The bottom 18D is the one I bought. Dennis got the top one which is my old one and Wayne got the middle one which is the coin Dennis had. Plus I think wayne's went to John if I understood correctly. Just the common switch-a-roo of Merc Dimes. image

    Ken,

    Nice.

    Are they all MS65?

    Lucy,

Eye sores? If your coins are eye sores, mine are from the junk box.

Those 67FB coins are Eye Sores. image Lucy is trying to be Humble while Bombarding us with 67 coins. image

Tony the top and bottom dimes are 65 coins and the middle dime is a 64. I had to have the Tone and just maybe a very nice suprise on the reverse of the coin. Great Anticipation is had to see the reverse of the new 18D. Teee Heee

Lets just say David Lawrence has yet to fail me with thier photos yet. image

    Tony,

I'm in the same situation as you - not able to find anything. So I figured I'd break down and get a new camera so I could enjoy looking at my Mercs (and other coins). My old camera wasn't bad, but it just doesn't show the detail that I want on small coins. I'm going to be busy re-photographing and replacing the pics in my Registry sets. That should keep me busy for a looong time, but I still wish I could find a nice Merc or two.

    Hi Tony,

I was lucky enough to get the MS64 18-D in the switch-a-roo, which upgraded my AU58 big time. My AU 58 went to Dimetime's young son Colton. Those at the bottom of the front page should be worried, this boy is moving up fast! I also managed an AU55 27-D, and a MS63 20-D. Plus 3 upgrades, 41-S, 42-P, and 45-D to 67FB, from 66FB. All three dimes of my 66FB dimes will remain in the registry, under another name. I have a couple of bids in on auctions, but I'm sure I will be blown out of the water when they hit the floor.

I understand your frustration Tony. I too am finding it almost impossible to find the coins I need in the grades I can afford. I am to the point, and have been there for awhile, of buying lower grades than I would like, but that I can afford.

If I can't find any hole fillers, I can occasionally find a late date upgrade, but even those are starting to get expensive.

I figure this as a 10 year project, so it is a continuing upgrade process. I look forward to the next few years!

Hmmm.....A possible bidding war for a dime that may come available next week. Stay tuned for details. Its in the 1920's. Tough stuff those 20's coins. image I know one guy wants it for sure. The Sky is the limit, price wise, in this situation. image

Just kidding about the price. Heck you know I would not put the screws to any of the merc folks.

Hi Tony and company image - yes I guess I'll take that as a cue to show off a new addition this weekend, a 26-D in MS65FB - a super true to grade GEM. Totally original mint luster - toned pinky peach, light blue and lilac...really nice courtesy of Mike Printz image

Wayne, indeed a nice jump from 58 to MS64 is more like a mountain - that's not your average upgrade - probably drooling all weekend image I'm still missing some of the common ones actually - I just won't settle for anything just to move around you know....

Ken, I need a hint - I need a some dates in the 20's image

    Marc,

Your photo upload worked fine. Very nice '26-D.

I'm going to try posting a pic taken with the new camera here. A 1918-D Merc seems to be appropriate.

    image

    Jim

Edited to attempt a photo upload a second time. Thanx to Ken & Marc for letting me know about the first try.

    Marc:

NICE 26-D. I have a warm and fuzzy feel for that date. One Saturday my mother-in-law happened to come over to our house. This is uncommon. I also got a package of coins in the mail from Bowers and Merena in which they had included some coins that were on my want list. This, too, wasn't very common. I opened the package sitting next to my mother-in-law at our kitchen counter. This is VERY uncommon. Lo and behold, there was a 26-D Merc in the package. And it was nice. As it happens, my mother-in-law was born in Colorado in 1926. So I told my wife that we had to buy this coin in honor of her mother. What could she say? I have never told her what that coin cost, but I always appreciated the coincidences involved that allowed me to acquire that coin with literally no questions asked! And so, sine then I have tracked 26-Ds just for amusement. And the one you got from Mike seemed truly excellent when I saw it on their website! image

Jim the obverse of the 18D is really struck up. Nicest of the 18D's shown here in my opinion. And the reverse looks like...... come on put a picture of it up for us to see. image

Very nice camera work also. The color of the coin looks great on my monitor. image

Yikes Jim your photo is super I can't believe what a POTZ I am with the camera - why my coin looks super on whitlow's site , and here it well looks like crap - I'd never buy - I hope my description helps - it looks way better than this.

also is this one of Ken's 18-D I'm confused now - it sure looks nice and what grade is it???

    Ken noted thanks........

Mark that's a real cool story there - how ironic - probably the only coin you ever splurged on with nary a doubt.... image why my mother in law....never mind you don't want to knowimage

OK, here's the reverse of my '18-D. Not as nice as the obverse, but still decent.

    image

While we're at it, how about the other 1918 Mercs? Here's the P mint (one of my favorites):

    image

    ...and the S mint:

    image

I took good pics of most of my Mercs yesterday, but it takes time to delete the old files, combine the obverse and reverse photos, and upload them all, so I probably won't have them added to the Registry until next week. Gotta get outside now and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Pretty darn decent on the reverse of the 18D. Personally I like the 18's almost as much as the 25's and 27's.

Okay you asked for it so here goes with the two 18's I have my pictures of. Hopefully tomorrow a picture of the 18D can be plastered up here. image

    image

and the 18P. This dime looks like Poo Poo in my picture but it has the Best Luster of any coin I own. If that mark was not on her cheek this would be 66FB all the way.

    image

and last but not least here is a Merc Collector around here trying to find coins for his/her set.

The 26D looks much better now. Hey dont feel bad my wife just does not get it when I spend hours taking pictures of the same dime. The darn camera is almost as addictive as the shiny little silver things we collect. image

    Marc,

The new pics of your '26-D look GREAT!! I'm glad you got that one, and not the overdipped 64FB they've had forever.

Hope you're able to get back in your family's good graces soon. As Ken said, photography can be somewhat addictive, not to mention frustrating when there are a gazillion settings on the camera for the f-stop, aperture, white balance, and all the other things you've never heard of before. It's rewarding when you finally hit on the right combination to produce good pictures.

Ken, I really like your '18-S, and I can imagine how nice the '18-P looks in person.

Since we are talking 1918 dimes, what do you think of my new beauty? 1918-P Obverse. I tried and tried to get both obverse and reverse pics on one post, but failed. image So I will make another post with the reverse pic - maybe, if I can make it work.

I picked up a 1916-D last night, after some conversation with my wife. She said fine go for it, so I did. The coin currently resides in a ANACS G6 holder. I am already anxious. The coin looks to be a solid Good. Check it out if you like.

I wasn't going to say anything at this point, but Dennis found me out. image

    1916D I picked up

Fooey....Fooey....Fooey. The 18D did not show up. They said it was shipped Registered Mail. Does this take longer than Priority Mail ? Maybe tomorrow.

The Anticipation is Killing me. image

Did get a coin off Ebay last night and dropped the seller a little note that it was about time he put a Merc up for sale, I know the guy. He came back with a statement saying that he thought I was a Franklin collector. Man that was a low blow if you ask me. image

    Hey Ken,

I am sorry to tell you that Registered mail is a whoooole lot slower that priority mail. I've had it take 3 weeks before. Not fast, but the most secure the Post Office has.

I added a couple of upgrades today. Upgraded my 29-S to 64FB from 64 no bands, and upgraded my 42-S to 66FB from 65FB. The duplicates will be for sale once I receive my new ones. PM if interested.

    Ken,

The last registered mail package I sent took three days from "the W word" to California, the one before that took seven working days, and the last package I send first class insured to 14 days.

    Hope you see it tomorrow.

    Tony,

Your '16-D looks like a high-end Good , using the grading standards I learned way back when, but it's as nice as some VG's I've seen in PCGS holders. You've got to go for the upgrade on that one. Good luck.

Wayne, thats a nice 18-S the toning looks too good I wonder - its really really even and cool - I'd say grade AU-58 wouldn't be surprised with an MS-61 62 or something - notice the ding on the fasces and nicks on the cheek. Cool eye appeal!!! Are you going to have it slabbed?

Marc, nothing obvious in my opinion.......but hey, I gave up pretending I know how to grade long ago <g>. Of course, my pics don't do it justice - especially the obverse which is fuzzy (the pic not the coin). The coin came from Board member rainbowroosies - it convinced me to sell my rainbow toned MS67FB for this MS66FB (a cool downgrade).

Well, you guys are complaining and moaning about waiting for your very cool coins. Let me share my tail of woe. I have a very small up-grade coin coming from David Lawrence. It's coming via insured mail, so someone here must sign for it. I was gone all this week on vacation but when I got home, there was no note saying that the postal carrier tried to deliver the coin and failed. So, I am cheered: Most likely the coin will be delivered today. My wife will be home most of the day, my 21-year old son will be home all day, my 14-year old son also will be home all day, as will my 9-year old daughter. And I'm going to get back home by 1:15. So, I think "Great--I WILL have that coin today or possibly tomorrow." Well, I come home at 1:15 and there's the dreaded note: We tried to deliver the coin but no one was home. So, I ask my wife: She left for 30 minutes to buy lunches for the kids, so the postal carrier was around my house at about 12:15. I ask about my 21-year old: Asleep. What about my 14-year old? Also asleep. I don't want my 9-year old answering the door, so she escapes my (unspoken) wrath. Gad, I HATE summer vacation because I now get to go stand in line at the Post Office tomorrow and these lines are about 40 minutes long. But, hopefully I'll like the coin and so will have a trivial 1 grade up-grade to joyfully post on Saturday! My coin isn't anywhere as neat as a 16D (!!!), an 18D (!!!), or a 26D (!!!), but at least it's better than a sharp poke in the eye....or a Franklin (Just kidding Lucy image)
