New numismatic site published today - www.mintnews.com

I just got off the phone with the client, Rich Schemmer, and published www.mintnews.com this evening. The way I put it together with the expertise of the clients involved is a pretty good match, I think. The site is owned and operated by Dave Camire, Rich Schemmer, J. T. Stanton, and Fred Weinberg. Let me know what you think of it...

Well, for starters, the home page loads WAY too slowly! Still waiting....still waiting....I give up, but let us know when to try again! It's a great group of people and I'm sure the site will be worth a look!

Server lag....just started an hour ago. I'm going to call the host Monday. Sometimes it loads like lightning, other times it can take a while. Just stop it and hit reload. It should come in fast at some point.

I'm on the phone with the host right now....they had a server outage and are working the problem...great timing. Please don't give up on me, I'll post again when things are back to normal.

Server techs say there's a script running somewhere on the server (a different domain) that's eating up all the server processing speed...that's the problem. Now they have to isolate and rid the problem.

Nice site, CD! They do need to add something to better describe their span of coverage. It appears that they are focused on US error coins only, but it's not clear.

Also, how often do they plan to "publish"? Daily? Weekly? What?

Askari - Good idea, I'll suggest it. It would work under a "mission statement" link.

They will be publishing as they write, and are going to be publishing on their own. I wrote all the back-end scripts that allow them to sign on, cut and paste the article, and write it to the database which then dynamically brings it to you. As for exactly how often - possibly three or four articles a day between them, possibly half a dozen one day then three days with one or two each....it will be a slight bit sporadic but by the end of the year there should easily be 300-400 articles in there. I guess there is no set publication schedule. Their intent is to publish things as soon as they hear about them, which is usually well before it comes out in print.

I might recommend a more regular "publishing" schedule. I'd like to know how often I need to check in to stay current.

Regarding the regular publishing schedule, I had a chat with a couple of them about that, and it has become an issue of concern that they are working on. The main point to the site was to publish information as soon as they had it - if they got something in on a Tuesday they didn't want to wait until a given day to publish it, they wanted it published right then. With the connections these guys have with the mint and the market in general, one of the four is often the first to find out about a number of issues. They wanted a place to publish those issues "up to the minute" so that's what I built for them.

The first though would be to make a "flash" news area where people would have to check in daily if that was of concern to them - reading it on the day of knowledge or discovery - then have another area that would be published on a given day of the week. After a number of days serving as a flash story, they would migrate to the regular news area. Just a thought, but one that might warrant some serious consideration.

Anyhow, thanks for the reply, your concern is being taken seriously.
