Set upgrades - grades are back

Just got some coins back from PCGS. I bought a set of 6 "unopened" 1971 proof sets. These really may have been unopened. Send 3 complete sets to PCGS for grading. Most of the grades were so-so---I though a couple more would go DCAM and/or CAM. But a 68DCAM penny and 69CAM JFK made the whole submission worthwhile. I suppose I should break them out of the mint holders and put them in flips to save the grading costs on the ones I know aren't worth it (for example, none of the quarters had a chance in hell at cameo).

Gotta love those pop "-/-" coins. Even better than the pop "0/0" ones (meaning none have been given the designation vs only coins of lower grade)

  • It was nice to get 2 winners!

Definately do break them out of the set so you don't waste money grading coins that clearly won't be special. Then you will have more money left over to buy coins.
  • I have a submission question for you:

Were you able to submit the coins in the original mint set holders and PCGS broke them out for you?

I've been considering sending some of my mint sets in but hate to break the holders.

    Thanks!

Chip pcgs will crack the mint holders themselves to save worry and heartbreak if ya wreck one, but they prefer 1 unopened set per subbmission...wouldnt want you to send 2 and get one back unopened...may cause a thread that might lead certain fools ta believe your whining. image

  • Yes! I did submit them (all three in one submission) in the original mint holders. In hindsite, however, I could have saved some money by breaking them out myself and not submitting five or six coins that were clearly (even to my eye) not worth grading.
