Coins with cuds...

What do you think of coins that have a cud? Do they ruin the eye appeal in your opinion? How do the grading services view them?

Does anyone have any pictures of interesting examples?

Dan

It depends on the coin and the size/location... my only coin with a cud is a 1982 nickel... I found it on the ground during recess and have kept it ever since... the cud is from 9-11 o'clock and is about as wide as the lettering. I think it's cool.

I don't have a scan but some ten years ago I got in change a Jefferson nickel that has a cud running from 4 to 6 o clock by the rim.

Last year I found a very large cud (~10%) on a 1999 Lincoln that I got in change! Pretty cool.

Other than for an error collection, I would avoid buying coins that have cuds, obvious die clash, or significant die cracks.

Cuds are cool, usually representing a terminal die state (with bust halves), some are very rare and bring huge money.

This may come as a shock to you but I already knew that.My saying "by the rim" was just over emphasizing, nothing more nothing less. image

I had an awesome 1890CC eagle with cud at about 2 o'clock on the reverse. Practically gave the thing away when I was an innocent collector.

That would be great to see on a classic like that.

Cud from 1:00 to 3:00, 2 significant die cracks, and numerous die scratches.

Cuds are great and I've been known to toss in an extra buck or two on occasion to obtaina coin with a cud. image

I love coins that are different.

Like the others, I found this change:

Although the cuds are small on the reverse of this Buffalo, I think they add character to the coin...

    Cool buffalo, cointrader! image

I like coins with cuds. And clashes. And die cracks. image
