The 1971(s) Lincoln I Bought - Problem Solved

wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,977 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was high bidder in his auction last month, where he held a contest here on this board to guess the winning price of the pop 1/0 coin he recently slabbed at PCGS and he sold the coin on ebay. Anyone remember that one? Well, how is it possible that the coin is already in someone's registry set? A customer of mine on the coin who I just sent the coin to tried to register it today and it was rejected as already in a registry set? How is this possible? I am sure there is a simple explanation, but, I am curious now that I am a registered set owner (#2 MS Kennedy Set with varieties) image

I truly cannot understand adding a cert number of a coin you do not own. What's the gain from so doing? The only possible financial gain is to boost your set so that if you do sell it, you can assert that it ranked higher than otherwise--though, of course, you can't sell the coin you don't actually possess. But my guess is that such financial gain is very minor, which brings me back to my original point: Why would someone bother to do this?

BTW Mitch, has this issue been resolved? If so, can you share the details of what occurred? (I guess I'm being nosy because I am straining to grasp why someone would add a cert number of a coin he or she didn't own....)

MS67PLUS just solved the mystery for me. I asked him to edit his post so I could explain it - thanks again Ed image

It appears the actual ebay seller of the 71(s) Lincoln (and our fellow board member, Melikecoins) I won the coin from on ebay last month was (presumably) forming a Registry set of the coins he has sold (or some of them) to collectors/dealers. While I am sure there was nothing sinister in this and no bad intentions , it is, of course, a "no-no" simply because the coins can not be registered by their current owners. Melikecoins - please remove the 71(s) from your set image

This is a good lesson for sellers of Registry coins to promptly remove coins from their registered sets, so the new owners can enjoy them and register them if they desire image

I have had this happen many times. I just send an email to the registry folks and they take care of it. Imagine if a thread was started every time this happened.image

dbldie: Yes, since this was the 20th or 30th time this has happened to me recently, I felt a thread was a good thing to see if we could figure out why this is happening so much (to me and obviously many other folks, like Lucy and her recently purchased 53(s), etc.).

One thing we may have learned here today is that the Registry simply can not be used for listing coins a dealer or collector has recently sold (AND THAT ONCE SOLD - THEY SHOULD BE REMOVED PROMPTLY FROM ANY SUCH SET). While it would be nice to have that ability to keep track of those coins, it simply complicates the registering process of the coins when the new owners want to add them to sets.

The Reg board hasn't been so overflooded with posts lately that this post clogs up too much image

It is something that needs to be addressed periodically in public, as a reminder. It's easy to overlook, and I have had
it happen to me also. mdwoods

I accidentally did this to a coin, not once but twice - Left them registered in a set. I sold them and promptly removed them from my registry sets, however I forgot that one was also entered into my 20th cent type set and the other was the fact that I shipped the wrong coin. Someone went to register the coins and they were rejected. These things can be simple mistakes so don't jump to conclusions that there was some dubious intent.
  • I've been on both sides of the fence. I forgot a coin I sold was also in my type set. I am also currently waiting for another coin to be unregistered. I am sure the cert # was stolen. It was a Lincoln I got from R T Coins.

For everyones information when I receive a coin I put it in my Registry Set for safe keeping.
There are to many real thieves out there to let a valuable coin run free.
When the new owner wants it I am notified by PCGS and release it.
    Problem solved.

As a collector of registry coins I can tell you this is a frequent event. I seller may forget to remove it from their sets, or they have the coins on consignment and the owner may forget to remove them. Just e-mail PCGS and they will contact the other person. If a dispute arises they ask for a copy of the coin and the cert. # from both individuals and the one in position will normally get the cert added to there set. Only if the other person can prove they own the coin and a possible thief has taken place will they pursue it further. Fred

You should release it as soon as it's sold, not wait for the owner to go through the hassle of contacting PCGS and PCGS going through the hassle of contacting you.

I agree with Russ, very few collectors have registry sets. Working like that you could be riding high in the registry for years on coins you do not even own. Not really fair to the other registry players.

    Mitch,
It sure is a shame you had to go through this enough times to warrant a post. I agree with what Russ said. If it is a coin I have for sale in my set, I make it a habit, that after I receive the payment and the coin ships, I remove it from my set. This works best for me and hopefully for the buyer, IMHO image

Here's another prospective: It hasn't happened to me yet. But, If I sold a coin from my set, I would think the best thing to do is keep it in your set until after the seller gets payment. They ship the coin, the buyer E-mails the seller letting them know they got the coin and are satisfied. If not, a refund is issued and coin is returned. If satisfied, delete the coin from your set and the new buyer adds the coin to their set. What if the coin gets "lost" in the mail? Anyone had that happen? I thought so. Now, PCGS has the coin number and can wait for it to resurface, then attempt to get the "new owner" information, and notify the authorities. Just another thought. Ray

This has happened to me a few times.......once, I was able to contact the person through the ebay "ask seller a Q", another time, PCGS did the contacting for me, and the 3rd PCGS had an invalid email for the person who had it registered, so I was sent an email telling me to send a scan of the coin in the holder, once I did that, it was freed up pretty quick. When i sell coins that are in my reg sets, I will email the buyer and have them let me know when they get it, then I release it..........my luck with the post office is lousy, so I want to make sure it gets where its going first. MorganBarber got 2 swap packs from me once because of the PO taking a month to deliver a 1st class package from Ga to MD, not that I begrudge him though...........too many people have helped me out on the boards and whatnot...........he is insisting on buying me lunch if I go up for the Baltimore show. Most of you board people are pretty okay in my book.
