Pricing a Pop Top Jefferson- how to?

This subject probably has been discussed here before, but I'm a part time reader of these boards and hopefully someone can help. My last submission yielded some very nice results. The best was a 1940-P Jefferson that made MS 67 FS. I think the current population is 6/0 (now 7/0). Is the PCGS price guide an accurate reflection of the true value of this (or these) coins? If not, has anyone come up with an accurate price structure or some method for determining values on low population coins? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Tim: The problem I often encounter is assisting in pricing and being interested in buying the coin. A combination I try to avoid. That is why I prefer having a collector do his own investigation and then offer me the coin at a price he is comfortable with. Or, simply consign me the coin and for a reasonable commish, I'll do all the work image

  • My observation is that for common coins, a general rule of thumb is that they trade at about 50% of PCGS price guide. However for low pop items such as this one, and especially for coins that are actively being persued by rabid Set Registry fanatics, the sky is the limit. And of course, if the coin is phenomenally toned, it will often trade higher than the guides.

  • The pops for top grade are only part of it. Certain dates that are notorious for poor strikes
and lower mintages will have an added premium. The quality of the steps is a major consideration.
The 1940-P is more common for six full steps (NGC graded 11 MS67FS). I probably wouldn't go as high
as the price guide although I've paid more than average for some pieces. Sometimes it was even justified!
I'd take a serious look at this one, but my jefferson fund is red flagged.

As a collector, I find this a very interesting question. I am not sure where to go. Some dealers and collectors use the CU while others suggest that it is of little help. I at times have used the price history of Teletrade, but this is limited to the coins they have auctioned. Can other more experienced collectors and dealers assist.

  • The price guides are no help. Most don't list them in the first place. Looking at previous prices realized is a good start. But as there are so few you would have to check more auction archives than TeleTrade. Heritage has an archive. If there is a similar date with similiar pops you can make a lose comparison. You can let Wondercoin have it and see what he can get for it or if you can find a few interested buyers you can have an auction image
