Not doubting that you have some nice coins up for auction, but why are the prices way above CU price guide? I dont collect Lincolns or any copper for that matter, but maybe I can learn something.

I dont believe the CU guide to be lagging on all coins as a whole. Perhaps a few individual coins, but my experience has been that coins sell below these prices.

Can you offer any help so I can understand the correlation that I am trying to make? Auction prices vs. CU prices.

    Thanks

I'm usually willing to pay way over CU prices for most coins of that caliber. This depends on how much free cash I have at the time and how nice the coin is for the grade. It's not uncommon for me to pay 2-3x CU price for some of the tougher coins.

I bought 12 36-S's from a forum member. I have no problem disclosing the price. I paid $100 for the bottom example and $115 each for the rest. I'll lose money on the bottom four or five since they are not as nice as I was hopeing for. The top three are PQ. I want strong money on them to make up for what I'm going to lose at the bottom of the pile. If you want one at $115, I've got three or four here I'd be glad to sell at that. I sold two screamer for $200+ apiece shortly before I bought this group. I offered the guy that bought the nicer one a $25 profit to sell it back to me. I was declined.

When it's all said and done with the 36-S's, once I pay e-bay and pay-pal fees, I might make $50 on them. Not bad for a $1365 investment.

On the 35-S's... the CU price does not reflect even closely how tough that coin is to get in PCGS 66RD... not with standing one that's actually bright red with a full strike. I passed on one at the TNA show at $350 that was off red with about fifteen or twenty small carbon specks on it. If it'd have looked like the one I just put up, I'd have jumped all over it at $350. The one I have in my personal set is an absolute stunner. I've passed on $600 for it.

On the 34-D... I've sold three in the last three months. I got $225 for the nicest, $200 for another, and $175 for another. The $175 example I sold in a non-auction. The guy that bought it from me had just finished buying a fairly large bill of coins from me. I had just bought the coin, he had it on his want list, so I passed it on to him at what I concidered a pretty good deal. ...the one up on e-bay right now, I actually got lucky on. The auction it was originally in was ending up in the day, when everyone is at work. I placed a low-ball bid on it at the opening bid, $125 and was pleasently suprised to have won it. It may or may not go at $175... but I dont have one in my set. It's a no problem coin. And although I'd ultimatly like one that's brighter, I dont mind keeping it for now.

The 46-S might be a little high. But not much in my estimation... if any. That sucker is really nice.

I hope this helps to make my "case" for you.

    Best wishes,
    David

If someone thinks they're too high... Well, no one's forcing anyone to buy them. I know the quality. I know the scarcity of the tougher shortset dates in that qulity. The people that I'm marketing to would rather pay for quality than get a bargan on a average to over graded coin. And if none of them sell, it's no big deal. I collect to.

The idea of my post was to learn how Lincolns are priced. I did not know that there is a difference between Red and Bright Red. It was not to bash the prices you wanted or to even have you justify why you needed the money you were asking.

As I said I have no idea about Lincolns, but was thinking of getting into it. It looks like a very complicated series to begin with. Throw in the learning curve of the pricing and I think it becomes prohibitive for me to participate.

Washington Quarters have it own nuances but they are fairly consistent and does not seem as difficult.

    Good luck!!

    Whitewashqtr,
I have dealt with David a lot (I have had him sell for me in the past, but NONE of these coins are mine), and you know when he describes a coin, it is exactly the way it is. With that said, the price guide for lincolns is a little out of date especially for top pop (or near top pop for low top pop coins) that are very nice. There are very few 34-58 MS67RD's that are priced correctly on the CU guide right now (there are even a couple that are TOO high). Just a crazy market right now.

FYI, the last five 1935-S PCGS MS66RD at heritage have sold for:
    $201<-dark
    $483
    $506
    $219<-dark
    $357

So $400 for a nice one seems about right.

Personally I own a dark 35-S MS66RD. If I had a little more cash I would upgrade to a nicer one.

Besides, someone has already bid on one of the coins, so it doesn't really matter what we think the coins are worth, someone thinks at least one of the coins is worth the money.

The CU priceguide is absolutely terrible... They haven't updated most prices in over a year, and the ones they do update they move way too high. 09-s vdb at 3250/6500 in 64/65 red resp... You see them sell all the time for 2500-2900 for 64 and 4200-5000 for 65...also 14-d Cu has 5750 in 64red but auctions are usually 4000-5000.

Meanwhile, most other dates in all grades are way way too low... 20-s 24-s,25-s for 335-400 in 64rb, 15-d,16-d,17-d for 185-250 in 64red, these are like half of what they usually go for. Teen P's are also at about half what they should be in 64/65red. For the few teen or twenties S coins which have actually showed up for sale in 64red/65red completely forget about it... check the Heritage long beach auction... or look at the prices Washington Rare Coins wants for ms64/65 red Lincolns (many for sale on ebay, wrcc@coinbuyers.com is their username I think). Oh yeah Cu has 14-s,21-s as the highest priced in 64red after 09-s vdb,14-d,26-s meanwhile they sell for way less than CU too, and 18-s,20-s,24-s,25-s are actually the next best dates (in my opinion) and are selling for way way more! Why are they so far off???? I assume it's the same with the newer dates 34 and up in high grades, but I don't follow these or collect these. What is Cu trying to do by continually increasing 09-s vdb,14-d, (and 09-vdb too) way too much and letting everything else get ridiculously out of date and underpriced???
