Merc Proof coins - NGC v. PCGS

Merc folks,

How do PCGS and NGC rate with regard to their grading on Merc proofs? Is it about the same as MS where there is somewhere between 1/2 and 1 point difference on average?

  • I'm not an official member of the Merc Gang, but have bought/sold quite a few
proof mercs in both holders grading PR65-PR67. It always comes down to the
individual coin, but in general I found both services roughly comparable in this
series, with maybe just a slight edge towards PCGS.

I currently have a complete set of PR65-66 coins. Five are in PCGS holders,
(three in the earlier green tag holders), but the '39 and '40 are beautiful NGC
PF66 coins that were clearly nicer than the same grade PCGS coins they replaced.

I don't buy into the perceived strictness of PCGS in regards to the Merc's, but the price guides do suggest your scenario with the mint state pieces. The proof's are different in the sense that the Bluesheet numbers for many of the Merc's are actually higher for NGC coins than PCGS. Same deal with Walkers.
I guess PCGS is more lax at grading the proofs than the mint state examples..............that does seem strange. Tougher standards for mint state coins than proof coins? Messed up price guides? Market perception? image

Sorry, I've never been a believer in the "1/2 and 1 point difference on average?" thinking. image

I thing NGC and PCGS are on the same sheet of music on proof coins, but MS coins is a diffewrent story different by the series.

I have a real nice registry set ..all PR68 excepting a 67 in 1936..i have tried without luck to cross any nice ngc coins over though..maybe just bad luck..i feel that pcgs is a little tougher on these.

  • I have two 1942 proofs. Both 67. The blue Merc is a special coin and is nicer. However it isn't as fully struck as the PCGS one. The PCGS coin is also nicer than most for the grade. I would sell my PCGS coin for a third of what I would need to part with the NGC one.

These are not average coins and there are only two of them. So I can't make any generalizations from them image
