What is it with Pete Rose?

This card is in SMR at $95 (save you all the bother of checking it).

The ironic thing is, I believe if he was allowed into the Hall, the value of his cards would plummet. He'd just be one of 257 guys as opposed to the one (un)justly excluded.

  • Can we say breakout and resubmission candidate?

Another example of an 8 hiding in a 7 holder.

  • It's not a PSA 8 in a PSA 7 holder, but it is a PRO 9.5 in a PSA 7 holder. 3 weeks from now you will see that card sell for twice as much in a PRO 9.5 holder.

    Several things ...

That is a very nice 1971 PSA 7 and 1971 Rose cards have been doing very well on eBay if they are a high grade example for the grade. Especially the PSA 7 ... the PSA 8 goes for approx 750-800 and I think many have visions of resumbmitting on their mind. Centering is tough on the Rose card, and the black border is tough on all of the cards in the set. I see that card as a very nice PSA 7, but most likely not a PSA 8. GAI 7.5?

If Pete Rose did get in the Hall - he will by the way image - I do not see a drop or increase in price. I think the cards just stay about the same.

I think by now that most of us realize that SMR often is not an accurate guide, predictor or estimator of a card's true value. Perhaps in general it is -- but in specific players, specific sets and specific eras, it tends to have many blatant discrepancies. It is a great starting point, especially for people unfamiliar with the sets/players they are bidding on.

SMR had nothing to do with it here.

Zardoz is correct and Horizontal is dead on. I wouldn't be surprised if we first find an attempt
to get the card in a Psa 8 holder first. And I could see it happening easily.

The real question is not what is it with Pete Rose but "How many buyers and sellers
    follow Horizontal's Golden Rule?"

Do the corners really look like "8" corners? The scan is not very good, so it is hard to tell -- it just looked to me like the corners might be too soft or have a touch or two (even if white isn't showing) to keep it from being an 8. Hard to tell

I agree with MikeSchmidt...how can you guys say that card is an 8 in a 7 holder? The scan is awful, the corners look shaky, and there is not a scan of the back of the card to boot! Saying that the card is a PSA 8 in a PSA 7 holder is premature at best.

Horizontal is 100 percent correct in his assumption. Check the buyers purchasing history, he buys PSA 6-7 and then check his auctions. He sells PRO Gem-mint cards, the same cards he purchased in prior weeks in PSA holders or raw

    What a racket

If someone pays a premium for PRO garbage, they have nobody to blame but themselves.

That just broke my heart to think that the 1971 Rose might go under the knife and wind up in a Pro holder. People need to start getting thrown in jail for that crap!! It's fraud!!
  • Oh, I am sooo innocent. I have clearly learned nothing about this game.

    I agree with Wabbitwax - heart-breaking.
