Need a Merc Dime Expert.

Not a half baked one like me but a real expert.

Here is the question. The 1934D had both a small and large mint mark. The small one being much harder to find. Was the small D about 33 percent, size wise , of the larger one ? If not the next part of the question probably is my imagination.

I have a 35D that has the large mint mark but directly below the mint mark there is a area that has been polished out. Looking at this area with a 15 power loupe it looks like a faint D about 33 % of the larger one is present. At first I thought it was Die Polish lines but they are not consistant with the circular polish lines that are common on this date and that also show on this coin. Has anyone else noticed something like this on thier 35D ? To me it looks like a smaller D was punched in then someone noticed the goof up and almost polished it completely out.

Thanks Much.
Ken

    Ken,

In the past I collected any varity of dimes I could find. And I found a lot of Mercs with repunched mint marks. And different size mint marks. The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes by David Lange shows a lot of the varities, but not all of them. The 34-D does have a small and large mm. I would say the 33% difference is about right. The large size was used from 34 on and I have never seen a 35-D as you described, But that doesn't mean that you haven't found one. I have sold off most of my Mercury varities like the small and large 28-S and 41-S and 42-S and all the different styles of the 44 and 45 S's. I do still have some including my high grade 1935 repunched date.
